25 mph normal top speed??

Hello, I want to know if 25 mph top speed normal for a 1978 15' foot open bow fiber glass boat running a 1979 evinrude 55HP with a load of three people (400lbs)?? Thanks for the help!

It sounds a bit low to mee, unless it is 400 each I would have guessed 35. Does your boat have a tach, and how many Rpm´s are you turning.

To compare, my 16' dighny with 2 people in it ( 300 lbs ) did 25-27 with my old 35HP crossflow.

Thanks for the fast reply I bought a tac on ebay but It is for inboard when I run the motor the tac goes all the way down marking 7000+<br />So I need to get one that will work for my out board!

Sandollar, get yourself a tinytach http://www.tinytach.com/ I got mine a couple weeks ago and won't be running my 15hp outboard without it again. Tells me how long the motor was running too.....Warren

Are you confident of your speed reading? Speedometers are notoriously inaccurate. Especially if you have one that reads much higher than your maximum speed (say a 70mph speedometer on a boat that will do only 35mph). You should have one that maxes-out just above your maximum speed. 25mph on a boat like yours is just barely planing. If you're comfortably skimming along on top of the water, you're over 25mph.

Thanks for the reply, The boat seems to be going faster then 25mph!! I just bought one of those 70mph guage so it could be marking off!! thanks agin!!

sandollar,<br /><br />Do not trust the boat speedometer.<br /><br />Get the Tiny Tach. You do NOT want to be lugging that engine. It needs to be propped to turn at least 5500 rpm with a light load.
