You may need to go back and double check those serial numbers - They don't match up to anything current.

Typical Evinrude serial number on a 2003 motor is a letter, followed by 8 numbers, for example: G05058496.

The Evinrude database uses the serial number to search warranty history and other information, therefore an accurate serial number is required.

-John

Your model numbers confirm that your engines are Bombardier-built, 2003 models, Amberlady.

Good luck. :)

JB, Thanks for checking. Will continue to post on the outcome of this saga...hopefully I can have my boat up and running before fishing season starts here.

Did you get a chance to look how the cables are held on the batteries?

DHadley,
No not yet. I haven't had a chance to go by the dealer to check it out as yet...wanted to wait a few days before my blood pressure goes back up again! Will let you know as soon as I get back up to Johnson Marine.
Out of curiousity, why do you ask?

Battery wing nuts are the number 1 no-no for those engines. They are a possible source of all kinds of electrical problems which you seem to have had your share of.

Anyone who has been to tech school on thses knows that but it never hurts to ask. But I wouldnt call and ask, I'd go look.

I have wingnuts on one of two batteries. The other has the post but nothing attached to them. never would have suspected that to ever be a problem. Would you please elaborate what's the problem with that???

Amber Lady,

Those motors are registered to a Chuck M. in Wilmington and the last warranty repairs were done 6 months ago in mid August of last year and the motors are still in warranty until 2006.

#...8668 had 3 claims: a voltmeter replacement, a starter solenoid, and an EMM.

#...5834 had 7 claims: a voltmeter replacement, 5 starter solenoids (???) , and 2 wiring harnesses.

Since these were 2003 outboards installed on an older boat, it looks like there were electrical problems, possibly boat related or "rigging" related that affected both new motors.

The replacement of 5 starter solenoids on one motor tells me there is a low battery voltage problem (battery, cables, or connections) or someone is just replacing parts without finding out the cause.

Dhadley may be on the right track if the factory battery clamps were not installed, and/or wing nuts were used on the batteries. Intermittent or internally corroded battery switches also can contribute to "weird and horrendous" electrical problems. Batteries with too small a capacity are a common source of problems with high tech motors of any brand.

It appears the motors have run OK, but there is an underlying electrical problem somewhere that has to be straightened out. I doubt if it is the motors' fault from the type of claims submitted to the factory. The voltmeter claims are not part of the engines, but of the boat.

Since there have been no warranty claims for 6 months, since last August, what seems to be the complaint? From the information available, it sounds like electrical problems in the boat are affecting the motors.

Are there any other circumstances that you haven't shared with us yet?

You said it was back at the dealer's, was it fine since last August and now something else cropped up?

Re: 12th breakdown of 2003 Evinrude Fichts

Hi All,
Mrs. Amber Lady here. I think I can answer some of the questions as I spend as much time on the boat as hubby does, except I only know about fish and fishing!
The boat is an older boat but it was re-wired about a year or two before the new motors were put on the boat. Since August, we have made a few fishing trips (weather was bad, I was out of country, etc, etc) and then it sat up over the winter. However, we do go over to the marina and either take it out for a short jaunt or he just runs it at the dock since my hubby is a stickler for keeping everything well maintained.
In January, he took it to the dealer to have it serviced for the new year (he does this without fail on every motor we have ever had) and on bringing it back from the dealer, the port motor broke down again. The service tech came down and replaced a part (I think something computerized) and they both ran the boat for a few minutes until it broke down again (I don't know if this is the same motor or the starboard one). Thus it is back at the dealer. He is going there today so he will get a report from the tech then and can fill you in on the details of what the problem was this time. While he is there, he will also check the batteries to see how they are connected. By the way, low battery problem was diagnosed and two additional batteries were placed on the boat, giving us a total of four.
Hope this helps. He will post over the weekend. Thanks for any additional advice you can give.
