Re: 12th breakdown of 2003 Evinrude Fichts
Amber Lady,

Those motors are registered to a Chuck M. in Wilmington and the last warranty repairs were done 6 months ago in mid August of last year and the motors are still in warranty until 2006.

#...8668 had 3 claims: a voltmeter replacement, a starter solenoid, and an EMM.

#...5834 had 7 claims: a voltmeter replacement, 5 starter solenoids (???) , and 2 wiring harnesses.

Since these were 2003 outboards installed on an older boat, it looks like there were electrical problems, possibly boat related or "rigging" related that affected both new motors.

The replacement of 5 starter solenoids on one motor tells me there is a low battery voltage problem (battery, cables, or connections) or someone is just replacing parts without finding out the cause.

Dhadley may be on the right track if the factory battery clamps were not installed, and/or wing nuts were used on the batteries. Intermittent or internally corroded battery switches also can contribute to "weird and horrendous" electrical problems. Batteries with too small a capacity are a common source of problems with high tech motors of any brand.

It appears the motors have run OK, but there is an underlying electrical problem somewhere that has to be straightened out. I doubt if it is the motors' fault from the type of claims submitted to the factory. The voltmeter claims are not part of the engines, but of the boat.

Since there have been no warranty claims for 6 months, since last August, what seems to be the complaint? From the information available, it sounds like electrical problems in the boat are affecting the motors.

Are there any other circumstances that you haven't shared with us yet?

You said it was back at the dealer's, was it fine since last August and now something else cropped up?
