I posted a question about not charging on a 1989
Evinrude XP150 and was told it was the reg/rectifier.I looked in the manual and it did not give me enough info so I have a couple of questions.

Does the flywheel have to come off to replace the reg/rectifier?

Is there something I should look for that could have blown it or do they just go bad?? Thanks Randy

Also I found one for $160, Is that a good price???

Re: reg/rectifier

Yes, you have to remove the flywheel. Sometimes they go bad because its possible to trap air at the top of the block and the reg/rec overheats. There couls be other causes too like loose nuts on the battery. Lose the wingnuts.

Make sure the one you found is for a 35 amp system. Both units look the same but the 35 amp reg/rec had a larger red wire. You can use a 35 amp reg/rec on a 10 amp system but not vise versa. You should have the 35 amp system with the vented flywheel.

There could be other reasons you arent charging but if you lost the tach too then its most likely the reg/rec.

Good luck
