hello, guys, im back, sorry for the long post, but theres lots to say.
6 weeks ago i purchased a used 1980 50hp evinrude from a local dealer/ rebuilder. motor has a 30 day warranty . thats why i bought it from him, ive had bad luck in the past. motor came without starter cause when i picked up motor, starter "went out" as he said. so i got a starter for it myself. then the stator went bad and wouldnt start.it was 3 weeks after picking up motor that i finally got it to start, including 2 trips back to his shop( 86 miles each way). after getting all else fixed, 2 days later number 1 cylinder throws a rod threw my block. so i call him and return motor to be check out as to why. this is what he said...and i qoute"Took motor apart and found the top cylinder ran "Lean". This is a very
typical problem if the carbs had NOT been done, but I rebuilt those
carbs. My guess would be a problem in the fuel system, most commonly,
"Sucking Air". The hoses have "Quick" disconnect fittings on the motor
and tank and they commonly leak, or suck air. All the fuel lines on
that
motor were replaced with new clamps, or Ty-wraps. If a fitting sucks
air
it will not pump fuel and because of the "T" in the fuel line the
bottom
cylinder gets fuel, by way of gravity, first. If the system did run
short on fuel the top cylinder runs dry first. Any type of blockage can
also cause the same problem.
I will work with you for a satisfactory closing to this problem,
however, it is NOT a warranty issue."

link to his warranty page, please read http://www.vikingmarineservices.homestead.com/Details.html

if he did the rebuild himself, how is this not a warranty issue.
AM I GETTING SCREWED???????????????????????

You didn't hear the motor run before you bought it? If it had a warranty why did you have to buy a starter and a stator? Is he saying the fuel pump is so weak it cant pump a tiny bit of fuel up 3 inches? Whats his solution to overcoming gravity?

When the motor started, what was the wot timing set at? What spark plugs did he put in it?

he refunded me the cost of the starter, but the stator was replaced by him,as was the power pack free...the plugs were champions.

he told me that if i took the motor, without starter, he would fed ex a new on asap, which he said wouldve been 2 days.motor had a money back guarantee, if i didnt like the way it performed, i could get my money back within 2 days, wich is how long the motor lasted, 2 days. well the starter never came... never came. two weeks later he refunded me 130 bucks off the amount i paid him and i bought my own starter.
now i am out 830 bucks and a motor. he will rebuild that one for 400-500 dollars.

IS THIS GUY (deceiving) ME CAUSE I DONT KNOW MOTORS.
am i being abused by the guy with the "knowledge"?

I gotta say that anytime I ever sold one of my motors the guy wanted to hear it run -- at least. To protect myself I like to take them out and show them how it runs or better yet check it over after they mount it if they wont let me rig it.

What did he mean by a "satisfactory closing"? I would at least give him the opportunity to offer something. With a bad starter, stator and powerpack it seems this motor had several issues.

when i brought motor back to him to be repaired, it was on the back of my boat, fully rigged, so he had a full chance to check it out.
i know 100 times more now than i did 6 weeks ago, i was told that we couldnt rope start it, it is too hard. i wanted to hear it run, but with a money back warrantee, what did i have to lose?!???!!!
and if the fuel had an air leak at the " t" in the fuel line, HE put that fuel line on there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! not me

I know the owner of Viking Marine. He has done a bunch of work for me over the years & always stood behind his work. I am running a V4 now that he rebuilt 10 years ago.

Something does not sound quite right here.

so little, the motor was used. he did not rebuild it. i do not doubt HIS ability to build an outboard motor, but he did not build this, it was used. he DID rebuild the carbs , whci if you read any of my previous posts on this motor, i have had NOTHING but probs ever since day 1.

Just my .02 worth, but it seems to me a full refund is in order. If not, I would ask why not. For that amount of money for a used motor, I would think he was adding in some money for the warranty, knowing that if it failed he would have taken in enough to cover his cost of repair. If he won't refund at least half and rebuild it I would ask him why not??
