i am wondering if my motor has water reflectors that may be damaged

You are right - a 77 25 HP has 3 deflectors between bore and outher block. Has it been badly overheated ? Whe do you think they are damaged ?

yes the motor has been run hot and how do i check them. what do they look like and how hard are they to replace????? thanks

You have to remove the cylinderhead. They look like small pieces of rubber hose squeesed in between block and bore. Change them, no matter. Clean water passages now that you are there, and change thermostat. Few $ but good insurance.
