HJB,To be honest it has been about 10 years since I've worked on this ignition system.BUT (always seems to be one) I remember it was great because you can put the whole ignition system in a bench vise, and spin it with a rope until it worked. And it would fire four plugs very easily.
My guess is to pay attention to the brass strip that brings the juice to the cap, make sure the rotor isn't shorted to the shaft, and I remember insulation problems on the terminal thru the housing.
Good Luck, DHP

Remove the magneto distributor cap. Rig a spark tester directly to the main coil terminal. If you have spark at that point, replace the rotor.

Use Rotor #580260 (Wide Flared Tip)

DO Not Use #580338 (Plain Straight Square Tip)

To rule out boat or engine wiring problems, disconnect the wire on the side of the magneto that is connected to the main harness. Leave the wire that goes to the points. Now see if you have spark, if so, trace the wiring system to see where it is grounded, or if the key switch is faulty. If you don't have spark, follow Joe's advise, it's right on.

One thing I have found several times on these magneto's is that the coil will have burned a hole through it's case an goes to ground. Pull the coil, and see if this is the case.

HJB.... That rotor is probably around $12.00 to $15.00 (in that area). Any Evinrude/Johnaon dealership should have it. If not, I have one left that I'd sell. If it comes to that, see my address below.

The #580260 rotor is an available part thru any J/E dealer that lists for 16.58.
