1957 evinrude lower unit troubles 30 hp.

i went to drain the oil on unit and i pulled a pillips screw instead of lower drain plug,now i cant get the hole lined up.i think it has something to do with shifter,and a guy moved the shifter and its in gear now .can someone tell me how to fix this problem?any help would be appreciated.

That phillips head screw is what the shift cradle pivots on. Removing it lets the shift yoke, and cradle fall down out of engagement. You need to drop the skeg off the unit to put it back in place. Just watch how everything comes apart, it is'nt that hard.

You may not need to remove the skeg. Invert the motor on a rag on the garage floor. Using a pen light, look inside the hole. Have someone move the shift handle SLOWLY while you look inside. You should see the hole in the fork move by the hole in the skeg. Using an awl or pick, poke at the fork and align the holes... replace the screw (with gasket in place).<br />- Scott
