I have a 1997 115 hp evinrude on my boat and I just hooked up the battery for the 1st time in about a year. As soon as I hooked up the battery the trim motor kicked on. I unhooked the battery and manually lowered the motor as it wouldn't do anything with the switch on the motor or on the control arm. I rehooked the battery and the trim motor started and the motor went to the top on its own. I have removed the cowl and unplugged the trim motor switch on the main motor and it still runs when powered. I believe the motor is stuck on and I have know idea what to do. Any suggestions???? Thanks :( :( :(

I think maybe a stuck solenoid. It's probably got two, an up and a down.

c/6
Hooty

Got a manual? If not, and you're gonna fix it yo'self, I'd be gettin' one. ;)

c/6
Hooty

JB...if you look on the starboard side of the engine, there should be and electrical rack (I think this on a '97  ). To the right side of the rack there will be two solenoids. Little square boxes...bout 1x1 inch or so square. One is for up and the other down. Flick both of them with your finger anyway....couple times. Then see if the trim motor runs when ya' hook up the battery. If it still goes up, switch the solenoids, they pull right outta the socket. If the engine wants to run down now, get a new solenoid and replace the up solenoid.

If this is a crossflow, they will be smack-dab in the center (rear) above the exhaust bubble chamber.
Also, I would recommend replacing both trim relays as they are inner connected during opperation.
