I have a 1985 90hp Johnson V-4 Outboard Model Number 90TLCO- It runs ok but I need to make it run the way it is supposed to.

What is the recommended manual for this motor?

How much should I pay?

Where can I buy it?

I don't want a common sense tune-up style manual, I need something that will go into detail on making this thing run right.

Thanks in advance, this is a terrific foru.!!!

Re: Recomended Manual

If you want detail, get a factory manual. figure $40.00, unless you can find one on E-Bay

manuals

Re: Recomended Manual

While the aftermarket manuals like the ones sold here are OK, I prefer the factory manual that's specific to your motor. Any JohnRude dealer can get one for you.

Perhaps we can help in the meantime. What is the motor doing or not doing that you'd like to change?

BTW -- in fine tuning the motor and set up a tach and water pressure gauge are a must. You probably have those anyway but its worth mentioning.

Good luck!

Re: Recomended Manual

I figured the problems were a bit complex to bother all of you with but since you asked.... :)

1) After sitting for over a year, the carbs were clogged up. I removed and cleaned them up and reinstalled them. Also installed new plugs and wires. Engine ran nice except for two things:

a) After sitting overnight, it won't start without shooting a little quickstart into the intakes. The primer pump clicks when activated but does not seem to shoot gas into the carbs. It did before I took it the carbs off. All other starts for the rest of the running day are fine.

b) The idle was a little too fast for the trolling I do so I attempted to slow it down a bit. I adjusted what I thought was the idle and it did slow down the motor however, I lost top end speed by what feels like 1000rpm and 10 knots per hour.

2) The tach (Original OMC) did not work correctly (before and after my work on the carbs), it showed about 1000rpm at idle and dropped to zero on acceleration. Occasionally it would jump up to 3000 and then drop back down. I replaced the tach and the new one (OMC also) works better- seemingly correct until 2800 rpms and then it drops back off.

a) Old tach and new tach were/are wired in the following way. Five wires come out of the loom.

2 Purple wires- One to 12v ignition, one to the post marked 12v on the OMC tach.

1 Gray wire- Goes to the post on the tach marked pul.

2 Black wires 1 goes to the ground post on the tach the other is/was not connected to anything. Where does this one go? When I check it with my ohmmeter, it shows that it seems to go to ground.

Earlier posts on this tach problem suggest I may have a bad regulator- however, I'm reluctant to replace the regulator without a good manual and until I determine whether that extra black wire is important.

I do have a water pressure gauge but I have not yet installed it. Is there a port or outlet for the nipple on my engine or do I have to drill and tap?

I know, it's a bunch of problems...

Dave

Re: Recomended Manual

Dave Snyder,

You need a manual, no question.

With that said, I believe you may have misadjusted the timing or synch.

The manual will take you through the timing procedure and the all important "synch and link" operation. This adjusts the throttle opening to the timing.

Did you make sure that the primer tubes were hooked up behind the carburetors?

The tach uses a signal from the alternator. Is your battery charging? If not, you may be in need of a rectifier replacement (not that expensive and easy to check and/or replace).

Re: Recomended Manual

A good project, I love it!

OK, lets start with the starting. First of all make sure the primer is working. Pump the bulb up tight and pull a primer line. Have someone engage the primer with the key. It should squirt fuel. If it does, then we may have the wrong base gaskets on the carbs. The correct ones have a hole that lines up with the primer nipple. No hole, no prime. What brand kits did you use?

Lets look at that first and then go thru the rest. I think youre right about everything else. The correct sync & link will get the rpm's back. And the regulator is most likely trying to bite the dust on you.

Let us know about the primer.

Dave, Back in the mid 80's,OMC manuals covered ALL models and HP.They did not have a seperate book for a given HP.You need #507508.My pricebook isn't upto date, but shows $79.95.
Not a bad price.Less then 1 1/2 hours at shop rate when saving on repairs.
DHP
