This is my second post. The first was in non engine repair. I got some solid feed back so here goes again. I recently picked up a free 84' 20 ft mako w/ a 89' Evinrude 150 VRO. Rough shape but "free". I was told the engine ran before it got stored. Boat and engine sat in the boat yard for 2+ years...never winterized or even covered in CT. I want to get the engine running before I do anything cosmetic. My first thought was to pull the carbs off and rebuild or at least do a good cleaning. I aready pulled one off and purchased the 3 rebuliding kits. Does any one have a words of wisdom re this task. What else should I do before attempt to turn over the engine. I did pour some marvel mystery oil in the heads. I don't want to cause any avoidable issues. My skill set is probably above average tinkerer. Thanks.

Use premixxed gas till you can verify the vro is working. Or disconnect it and run premix.

Get a repair manual.
Overhaul carbs.
Clean or replace fuel line and bulb.
Empty and clean gas tank.
Use fresh fuel.
New fuel filter.
check all wiring connections, including ground, clean and tight!
Drain lower unit oil.
Drop lower unit and put in a new water pump.
Replace the lower unit and fill with oil.
Don't ever run the engine without a water supply, not even for a few seconds.
Cross your fingers.

Have fun.

if that was my evi i would

- spray liberal amount of fogging oil into every cylinder. turn the flywheel so oil will be lubricating better.
- if the starter works i would do a compression test.
- than i would drop the lower unit do the waterpump
- than if motor has VRO i would mix 50:1 till you are 100% shoure the VRO pump works
- Check spark
-if everything looks good try firing it up.
than you will see how the motor runs and might need a carberator rebuild.

But i am not a mechanic.
good luck
i have a 20' mako 73 with a 1989 evi 110hp.

I'd try to run an unknown motor before I tore into it. You'd be disappointed to rebuild 3 carbs, only to find a busted rod, or a holed piston. Just a little idling on the muffs, followed by a compression test, can give you a good idea what you're looking at in terms of repairs.

Mystery oil down all six is about as much as you can do to loosen things up in a motor that's been sitting. Ultimately, you could try running fogger in it, with the starter spinning. Let it sit for a bit, then run 50/1 premix on your fuel line & see if she starts. I wouldn't worry too much about it sitting 2 winters, unless it was in a very humid location.

Lemme know if you need someone to take that Mako off your hands...

Lets start at the begining. Does it turn over smoothly by hand with the plugs out?

If so, lets hook a battery to it and take some compression readings.

Great gift!

As a person who has tinkered with many older outboards I would do a compression test first. Then if compression looks good and even check for spark. If both of those look good then I would clean the carbs and try starting it. Use mixed fuel as the others have said. You don't want to take a chance that the VRO pump isn't working. Once it is running you can check the rest. First thing to check is the water pump. If it isn't working don't run it for more than a minute or two or you will overheat. From this point you should know what else needs to be worked on.
