This motor was given to me by my father. Its a 50 HP evinrude and I believe it says "Lark" on the cover. It's gold in color and I believe it to be an early 70's. It ran fine two years ago. I am sure with a new set of plugs and cleaning the carbs it will fire right up. I am concerned about the reliability of the shifting from F-N-R. I know it worked fine last time the boat was out but after looking at the motor as the new owner I realized it looks like it shifts electronically by wire rather than a cable-linkage. How realiable is this system?

Another question, I have changed water pump impellers before and didn't have any proplems. Is there anything I might run into installing a new impeller.

The numbers for the motor are: Md # 50173S
Sr # E10065

Thanks , Gary

50173 50hp 1971

They don't make the selectric shifts any more. There are reasons why. One is cost. Many boaters are still using them though.

Re: Motor opinion

Im not sure but I think theres a special oil to use in the lower unit of these motors ??
I remember my dad had a 1970 70 hp Johnson. We were going fishing one day, the motor started in gear at the dock and we hit another boat. The shifter was in neutral. My grandfather told him that water in the gear lube could cause that. These motors arent bad despite the few problems with them. In our case potentialy dangerious

Re: Motor opinion

The electric shifts take a gear lube for electric shifts such as Bomby Premium Blend C. There are others. Just make sure the container states that the lube is for electric shifts.
