Time to rebuild carbs?

Just taken my 1987 88hp out on its first run since trying it out. The engine idles well and does really well at full throttle. My concern is that there's not much in between. The throttle is unresponsive until approx 45 degrees and then it comes alive all at once. I found it difficult to accelerate smoothly and difficult to maintain a cruising speed. My wife quickly had enough and wanted out! The previous owner said he had partially disassembled the carbs a couple of times before for cleaning, but they had never been rebuilt. I would like to think this is something I could do myself, but I'm a little hesitant to start tearing them apart. Any suggestions or words of wisdom?

Hi, Mark.

Gummy carbs could be your problem.

You also need to investigate synchronization of the throttles with the ignition advance. If the advance is coming in late or is retarded for smoother idle it can cause your symptoms.

Good luck. :)

Thanks for the replies guys. I got my manual ordered today. I took notice to earlier threads and sent for a Evinrude factory service manual.
