Where was the screw located that you pulled out? On the shift shaft or the lower unit housing itself? Sounds like you're OK, but...

When I pulled the lower unit down it came down about two inches and stoped , So I took out the phillips head screw and it came all the way down , now this screw is about one inch long with shoulder on it ,did I really make a big mistake here or will I  be able to just slide it back in ?Jeep Joe

Re: 91 JOHNSON OUTBOARD

If you removed the phillips secrew, you will need to disassemble the lower unit to place the shifter fork back in place. A Manual will be needed for this. I have heard of others that got lucky by leaning and turning the lower unit until it lined up again and then re-installed the screw, but I have no first hand knowledge of doing this. Hopefully someone that has done this can help. You are not being ignored. The right folks have just not had time to read this yet. Hang in there and keep bumping this post up everyday if you don't get an answer. All you have to do is reply to the message and put ^^^^ in the message and it will go back to the top.

Though I never tried, I´v heard its sometimes possible to line the fork up and get the screw in again. I do not think there are any washers on it inside. Get a helper to carefully wiggle with the shift rod, a penlight, a couple of beers and patience and have a thin screwdriver at hand to catch the fork through the hole. I would sure spend some time to avoid taking l/u apart.
