can someone define these: stator, coil, rectifier, powerpack (CD Ignition), timerbase. in terms of how they realate to each other and what they do. how do you know when you have a bad timer base? i have 1988 88 hp

Re: stator, coil, rectifier, powerpack (CD Ignition)

I'll give it a shot.<br /><br />Stator is a dual function part that supplies AC voltage to the powerpack and rectifier. It creates its voltage from the rotation of magnets attatched to the flywheel.<br /><br />Rectifier changes AC voltage to DC voltage for charging purposes. Most tachometers get their signal here.<br /><br />The power pack is multifunction. It stores voltage from the stator until it gets a signal from the trigger(timer base) to release it to the coil. <br /><br />The trigger controls which cyl fires and when by sending vvoltage to the pack which in turn releases the stored stator voltage to the coil. It's voltage is also created by magnets from the flywheel.<br /><br />The coil amplifies the voltage recieved from the pack and fires the spark plug.<br /><br />Thats the very basics of it. DH

Ya' got it right for the most part DH. But most muti-function stators contain an extra coil (sometimes two) for sending the initial charge to the power pack. This is a DC votage and the coil is called a charge coil. Some stators also have a "power coil" which supplies votage for other power pack functions like S.L.O.W.. Good explaination on the rest. :)

Yep, I was trying to be very basic. But I believe ( may be wrong) the voltage supplied to the pack is AC from the stator. It is rectified in the pack itself before being stored in the capacitor. DH

The charging coil in an extra stator coil generating dc-voltage for charging the battery or for supplying<br />the tach or other devices with voltage.<br />The power coil generates ac-voltage (200-300 Vp), which is rectified in the powerpack and then charging a capacitor.<br />The ignition voltage for the primary side of the ignition coils is gained by discharging this capacitor through thyristors set into the on-state by trigger pulses from the timer base.<br />So the name cdi (capacitor discharging ignition). <br /><br />Nordy
