It's a 1986 Evinrude 225 on a 231 CC 1986 Mako, went out last Saturday, after clearing the "The no wake zone", pushed the trottle down and got on plane at 5000 RPM's. Everything was fine and the boat was doing 30 MPH when after around 1 minute all of a sudden the engine shifted to neutral, but the trottle was still "forward" The engine was still running, water coming out of the pee hole. Turned engine off to check, could not see nothing wrong on the outside.

No broken prop, no oil residue in water, no holes in lower unit/mid section. Shift rod still attached to cable and move up and down. Engine runs fine, but would not go into forward or reverse. Anybody have something similar happened to them, where should I start looking. Any help or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

Check the prop hub. You may have spun it. With the engine in gear try turning the prop. Does the prop shaft spin with the prop (problem inside L/U) or does it stay still (hub is spun)? Do you have a spare prop to try?

Sounds like you broke the drive shaft in your lower unit. I had that happen on my 1987 200 HP. You are probably in the market for a used LU. Hopefully you will prove me wrong, but I doubt it.

Re: 1986 Evinrude 225 shifting problem

Thanks for the quick responses. Brian, I did try to spin the prop while in gear and it turns freely, although it's in gear.

James, that was the first thing that came to mind when it happened, but I thought that if water is coming out of the hole, then the shaft most be turning, unless I am wrong. If it's in fact a L/U problem, where should I look at, the clutch dog, or the gears itself. Or maybe like you said, I should start looking for a used L/U.. Thanks.

Thats because it is broken below the water pump. The same thing happened to mine. Water pumped and everything. Not to fear though those LU's are all over ebay.

James, that makes a lot of sense! I didn't think about that.. Well at least I have an idea of what to look for this weekend when I pull the L/U out. Would you recomend to get a used L/U or try to repair this one. Thanks.

By far find a used one. I feel your pain. I was comming in from the ocean and when i hit the ICWW I wound it out. I decided to hit the trim button 1 more time and snap it went. Luckily I got it throttled down before the motor blew up. I had just purchased my motor used so the dealer I bought it from gave me a used lower unit.

James,
Thanks for all the advice, I will start looking for a used L/U then. Ebay and Iboats would be a good place to start. I need to move quick, Kingfish season is here already....

Mako,
You could also check out Don's Marine Salvage over here in Clearwater to avoid shipping costs from an Ebayer. I go there frequently and he has quite the collection of pretty much everything.
www.donssalvage.com

Dave

Dave, thanks for the info. I know where Don's shop is, I will pay him a visit since I work at MacDill anyway.

Yes, you're right. The blue angels have been flying over our office all day... I believe they are doing a pre-show today for all the active duty families aboard the base.
