Re: 2cycle vs 4cycle

Howdy, Ebbtide.

You wont HAVE to change over as long as your 2 stroke lasts, any more than you HAVE to buy a new car if your 1956 Caddy pollution machine still runs and passes safety inspections.

In California you can't buy a new 2 stroke. Other states may follow. In some places you are not allowed to use a 2 stroke. Those rules are local and very unlikely to be copied by states.

The anti pollution regulations relating to outboards limit what you can buy new, not what your present engine does. Except for California I doubt that they will ban clean-burning 2 strokes like the Ficht, OptiMax, HPDI, etc.

All of the predictions above are just opinion. Take it for that.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

FL and Nh are becoming part of the new EPA rules, which won't take effect till 2006, so don't worry, it won't effect an engine you now own!!!!!!!

JB,

Is California allowing the clean burn 2 strokes to be sold?

I just read that the Optimax exceeds the EPA's 2006 standards for all O/B (2 & 4) and was awarded Californis's "Three Star Rating" for reducing its 2 stroke polutants by 91%. My Merc dealer told me the larger fours won't be out until 2004

Is Mercury missing out on all sales of larger motors in California?

Thanks ;)

Howdy, Capt. U.

I could be wrong. I was under the impression that they banned sale of new 2 strokes.

It would certainly make more sense to ban based on pollution level rather than arbitrarily ban 2 strokes. Then again, when does what CA does make sense?

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

JB

The left coast does have there own way of doing things.

Some of those high-tech two's are just about the same as some four's on pollution.

And as for the real big boys like Merc's Pro Max 300X, they may never go away unless outlawed in all 50. Than again the US isn't the only place they run them.

Thanks

J.B. I'm pretty sure only the carbureated and EFI two strokes are being banned. The direct fuel Optis,Hpdi and Ficht are greener than some of the four strokes.I know I've heard that some gov't agency out there has gone to one of those direct injection engines for their boats.(It's this old age thing-don't remember the particulars.) :D

Not true. If the 2-stroke carries a 2006 EPA (Star) emissions standards it is legal in Cali. Ie..Optimax, Yami HPDI, and Ficht. Lake Tahoe has it's own rules and unclear at this time what they are. I think they will allow Fichts but unsure about the others. Brian
