Hi guys~ I'm rebuilding a Bass Tracker and need some advice on wood and carpet. I printed off some info I found here on painting al so I got that down~ now the flooring. I can't find XL ply locally and it's outrageous to special order so will treated wood work? the green stuff?
I'm seeing a reference to applying resin or epoxy over the finished/fit/drilled piece, is this really needed? Can I just use poly resin, no glass, over the wood and that will do it?
And on carpet, I'm looking at a mid-high quality marine poly carpet~ is this the first choice?
One last hair brainded idea I had~ Has anyone ever put that spray on bedliner material on thier hull bottom? I can't imagine ever worrying about a leaky rivet with that stuff on~ maybe it's a stupid idea but thought I'd ask the pros~

Thanks! Good reading too!
PS, for anyone who may be skeptical, I purchased a 2000, Johnson 70 from Iboats last fall for this Tracker, I got a chance to run it a few times before winter and what a powerhouse!!! Beautifull motor, great price, good people to work with, they made it simple!... just wanted to add that, it's how I found this place~ Take care. Len

My opinion, use the best grade of plywood you can afford, then coat it well with a good poly-resin,make sure it is well sealed especially the edges, so water can't get in.
Can't help you with carpet.

I'd use treated plywood. I would also do the bottom side with 2 coats of resin before installing. Then glass in and coat the top side with 2 coats. That way it will last for the reimaining life of the boat.

I don't understand the Q regarding covering the hull with bedliner spray. Isn't that stuff designed to be rough and skid resistant. That 70 horse will feel like a 20 horse trying to push a boat that won't slide throught the water. Has to cause a lot of resistance.

That is the way I see it.

I just replaced my floor and my transom. I used treated plywood for both. To me it does not make sense at all to use un-treated wood in a boat.

Shallowatr210,

I just replaced my floor, decking and transom in a 16' Sea Nymph. I have done several.

I used exterior grade plywood and coated it with resin-no glass mat. The trouble with treated (green) wood is that is difficult to get anything to stick to it, ie; carpet glue, resins, etc. It also has a tendency to warp as it dries out.

If you are worried about rivet leaks, there is a better way to insure you do not have any other than spraying in a bedliner. Which by the way is VERY expensive! I thought it might be a good idea too until I checked out the price-$5.00/sq. ft.!

Treat the rivet heads (inside) the boat with a product called Gluv It. It is availble from West Marine at: www.westmarine.com.
A one quart size will be more than enough. By the way, don't be alarmed when you open the one quart can and it's only two thirds full. That's the way it's supposed to be.

As far as carpet goes, alot depends on how you will use your boat and whether or not you will let it sit in the sun without a cover. Sun is the enemy of carpet.

My experience has found that the indoor/outdoor grades of carpet availble at home outlets is about as good as the medium grades from marine supply houses. It is also half the price.

Thanks for all the answers! and keep them coming~
I will be storing this with a cover on it, but outside. I've already spent too much to cut corners now.
OK, the spray on bedliner stuff, it was just an idea I've had. I have 2 PU's with this stuff and it's tough as all get out~. When I look at a thousand rivets on the bottom of the boat I pretty much dismissed additional drag with this stuff, in fact, it make break the water tension pretty well~ who knows, I'm not going to do it, I only wanted some opinions, thanks! I tend to think outside the box, like when friends said all I needed was a 40hp for my boat but it's rated for 80 so the choice was a matter of mx HP/$$ I had to spend.
I also upped to a 13 gallon fuel tank, how long could I expect it to run say normal cruising?
Thanks again~

Use the Gluv It on the INSIDE. It has a tendency to flow into crevaces. The 70 Johnson with that load will burn about 5-6 gallons per hour at cruise.

shallowwater,

Send me your e-mail, I send you some pictures of my Sea Nymph project. I've found that most folks on this board DO NOT like pictures posted. Your starting point (boat condition) was much better than mine.

radamus210@yahoo.com < don't see yours so here's mine.
I had a lot of rotted edges. Someone slapped a piece of ply on the foredeck and the floor would warp when it dried out, pulled through the srews, well rotted around them. Carpet was ragged. But really overall it's all there. Probably a top of the line boat in it's day. After replacing the motor I thought I just can't have it looking like that and winter came :)

I would not use poly resin. Use epoxy resin to seal the wood. You can get good epoxy from Raka.com. You can also use 1 layer 1/4" lual ex grade 1/2 to 1" foam and top it with another 1/4" of luan and coat it with severial coats of epoxy. This will make a strong light weight deck. Epoxy wont eat up the foam, poly resin might. Epoxy don't fume as bad either and give you more working time then poly. Poly kicks off too fast sometimes and does not get a chance to soak into the wood.
