Can anyone give me any advice on converting to a 24v trolling motor system? I have a standard 12V, two wire, red and black system now. Do I need a new plug on the bow, and how are the Batteries hooked up? Should I use two sets of wires? 8 gauge 10 gauge? Thnks for any help given

Is the new trolling motor 24volt only? If so you will only need the redand black wires and no new plug is required. The batteries will need to be hooked up in a series.

* pos on bat #1 will connect to the red wire on your trolling motor.
* neg on bat #1 will connect to the pos on Bat #2.
* neg on bat #2 will connect to the black wire on your trolling motor.

For 24v system I would use 8 guage wire with a good inline fuse at the battery.

If you new trolig motor in 12 and/or 24 volt. One or the red wirs from your plug in should be wired as mention above, and theothe red lead should be wired like a standard 12 volt.

hope this helps.

cudats,

I would be alittle concerned as to whether the 12V motor can handle 24V.

the new motor will be 24 volt. Its the old wiring that concerns me.

yo cudats
To answer your question properly, we must know more facts:

>how much current does the new motor draw?
>is it 12/24V or straight 24V?
>how long is the wire from troller to batteries?

Re: 12v -24v conversion

It is a straight 24. It is on a 16 foot boat, so I think the wire should be about 18-20 feet. I don't know how much current it draws. Thanks

Re: 12v -24v conversion

Just go with 8 gage wire and find out the fuse size(ie..10,15,20,30,etc) you need. This should be in the owners manual. I am almost positive that mine has a 30 in it.

Like I said above, if the motor is 12 volt and 24 volt you wire it a little different.

If it is just straight 24vlt then run the batteries in a series as mention above and thats it.

If the motor is just 12 volt you run red to pos. and black to neg.

In any case use 8 guage wire with an inline fuse at the battery.

Oh, most 12 volt motors will run on 24 volt current, but they run really fast. :D
I would NOT use a 24volt system if the motor is not designed for it.

Re: 12v -24v conversion

the motor has a fixed resistance associated with it. the current that flows is directly proportional to the voltage as indicated by the fundamental formula I=V/R. resistance is affected by the length of cable, the cross sectional area and the material from which it is contructed. so to design something that you know will work you nedd to know;

1: the max current draw of the motor (the current fluctuates with the amount of load on the motor.) current draw is greatest at start-up.

2: the length of cable required - confirmed 18-20ft

3: the operating voltage of the motor - confirmed 24V.

by operating a 12V motor on 24V you:
1: double the current flow through the motor
2: therefore double the heat produced by the coil's resistance (power losses)
3: heat produced can eventually melt insulation and your coil (armature/stator) whatever you want to call it will die and need to be rewound. (i dont know if trolling motrs are rewound.)

just giving you some theory. hope that it helps.

Re: 12v -24v conversion

I am not operating a 12v motor on 24v current. I will be replacing a 12v motor with a 24v motor. I have on my boat an existing wiring setup for 12 v consisting of a red and black lead. I am just trying to find out the changes needed in wiring a 24v motor for 24v current from a prevviously wired 12v system. thanks

Re: 12v -24v conversion

Your problem is going to come when you load that trolling motor up with weeds or something that bogges it down. this will in turn melt your wires if they are not heavy enough guage. That is why I use heavy wire and an inline fuse. The fuse is cheap compared to a new motor.
