Went to the boat show yesterday, studied these three boats. Thinking of upgrading to a new boat and looking at these three.

I have opinions and such but I want to hear everyone's unadulterated viewpoints.... so let's have 'em!

None of the above. I would try hard to get into a Bayliner 185. Or start shopping used boats.

Kelly Cook

Is Maxum still the same as Bayliner? If that Tron has the Vec hull, it's no contest. It's just a matter of the power plant.

az
i own a 1995 maxum 2000sc and like it has not shown any build problems yet it so i am not inpartial but it has a 3.0 and is deffiently underpowered

i would try to get the V-6 power no matter what boat you pick it will be a much smother runing motor

i would look at all the engine installs to see what kind of space they have given for service

(my maxum has a huge engine cover that allowed good acess to all the power options and was a big reason i picked it)

the next big item is the sterndrive merc vs volvo the alpha dog shift is a PITA compared to the volve cone clutch.

the longer i own my alpha which has been good to me the more warts i realize it has

i had to LMAO when i first herd the word black anchor used to describe it and its sad but true something that should be simple like changeing the bellows is a huge project

tommays

The Bayliner 185 is significantly more boat than the 175. In every way. If you stick with the 3L motor, then the price difference between the 175 and 185 will not be all that much. Spend some "quality time" sitting in both boats and the differences should become obvious.

Kelly

az
1. i am sorry that you dont find it usefull to no how someone who owns a maxium has seen it hold up in real world use

2. i guess pointing out if the engine area is large enough for service is not at all inportant

3. letting you no that the V-6 is a much bettey power option

4.that the volvo and merc drives have BIG differences

i dont think the odds are very good that 30 people who own those exact boats are going to show up here right at this moment

i could talk trash about something i dont own but dont see how that would help

tommays

Have you looked at a Rinker 192, or 212 Captiva?

Thanks for the input... Bondo (we love you btw, I read your other post, don't stop helping) but as for the search comment... Didn't I write that I had searched them out? And isn't 50,000 over 1,000? :)
.
I am VERY familiar with the three models, I was looking for Additional input, not base input to build on.
.
Tommays, thanks for more input.. I was comparing the three boats, referring me to a different model/brand (although appreciated) was not the question. I don't know what "the next big item is the sterndrive merc vs volvo the alpha dog shift is a PITA compared to the volve cone clutch" means????? So, is PITA good? Dunno, and your post states an opinion (i think) but no conclusion. I did look at engine access, thank you. Thanks for the thoughts on engine size etc... appreciated but not relevent to me. I have a definite budget, and anything other than these three are outside of it.
.
Read the other threads. Don't know much about stingray, they must not be popular out here, can't remember ever seeing one.
.
NYMINUTE, I did, but the sticker shock is significant. I am in the $11,000 range. Thank you.
.

Re: Bayliner 175, Glastron 180?, or Maxum 1800MX

For me, I find the Bayliner 175 to be very good value for the money. Everything is included for some really decent boating with your family. The Maxum 180mx is the exact same boat, made by Brunswick and share the same hull same powerplant, same leg and trailers. Trim level is elevated an corresponding sell price is $4000US more. The Glastron is a much heavier boat and will need the 4.3L to acheive the same performance. Styling on the Glastron is not for me. I know alot of postings talk about resale value, and I did not really understand, but the Maxum will have way more resale then the Bayliner. If you ever want to trade up, then consider the Maxum over the Bayliner. For $2000USF more than the Maxum 180MX, I bought a 2005 Searay 180 Sport. It shares the same hull, same powerplant, same Alpha one leg as the Maxum but Searays have very good resale value, whether it is justified or not. I went to an auction and saw a 2001 Searay 180BR sell sight unseen by a guy on a telephone for $14,000 Cad. This boat was abviously abused, and I my opinion was not even worth bidding on, but that is the position in the market that Searay has. In the end, it is true that there is no boat that is better than anouther, only boats that fit better to your needs. Heck, you could spend twice as much and buy a Cobalt if it fit you. Happy hunting

PITA (PAIN IN THE A??)

all you have to do is test drive the boats

one with a volvo drive shifting smothly and one with the merc drive clunking into gear

it is a big PITA when your doing any type of docking with the merc and have clunk clunk every time you have to go forward and reverse

if i had been able to test a boat in 1995 with the volvo drive it would have been a BIG factor for me

you said you were looking at a maxum i have one with a 3.0 and tryed to give some feedback on a basic maxum modle

i am not sure were some of these facts are comeing from but baja, bayliner, bostonwhaler, crestliner, hatteras, lowe, lund, maxum, meridian, palmetto, princecraft, sea boss, sea pro, searay, sealine, trophy only have a parent company in common

goodluck with your new boat
tommays

Re: Bayliner 175, Glastron 180?, or Maxum 1800MX

There was a Stingray dealer in Tucson back in the '90s. But only for a few years, sorry to say. Decent boats, but I have not been able to examine a recent one.

If your budget is $11k, you are pretty darned close to a Bayliner 185 with 3L motor. Do yourself a real favor and take another look at the 185. A 185 would laugh at anything Patagonia Lake could throw at it.

My own Chris-Craft had a Volvo SX drive. Which was very nice. Point is, I'm familar with Volvo. I have also operated a friend's bowrider with the Merc Alpha drive and that "clunk" everybody likes to b***h about was barely detectable!!! No doubt an Alpha with its linkage out of adjustment would be a lot worse. But this one worked just fine. Now I started out with outboard motors, which all have the old dog clutch. So it was already my habit to shift briskly. If you insist on shifting very slowly, then you will want the Volvo. But it's really a matter of maintenance and technique.

Kelly

I would go with the glastron with a v6 and volvo drive but that's going to cost thousands more the the bayliner.

If your on a tight budget, consider a boat that's a couple of years old. A lot of people buy these starter runabouts 17' or 18' and upgrade within a couple of years. It happens so much there is a term for it "two-feet-itis".

Bondo (we love you btw, I read your other post, don't stop helping)
OK,.......... You Asked for It................. :D
The Glastron is a much heavier boat
That translates to,"It's a Better Built Boat"........... More Fiberglass.... Stronger Hull..... Better Resale.....

I've read All the Arguements.....Nobody has come close to convincing me that Bilgeliners are Anymore boat Now, than they were in 1980......
The Newer 1s just haven't had the Time , to Rot,+ turn to Dust...........

I'm Sure that in 2025 the Same posts,+ Questions are going to be, being Asked,
"When did Bilgeliners become Better Boats"....And,.. The Answer is going to be the Same,.. "Oh, About 5 years ago" .....

Ayuh,... They ARE Cheap.....
Ayuh,... They LOOK Good......
Ayuh,... They Don't Hold Resale Value.....
Ayuh,... They're Still built with the Least amount of Inferior Materials , to create the Illusion of a Quality Boat .......

I see the differences between the Bilgeliner,+ the Maxum, is like comparing Chevy,+ Pontiac.....
1 is Dressed Better, But,... They're Both the Same Under the Skin.........
The Glastron would be a Buick,... Maybe....

As stated here Several times,...... If you're limited in your budget,... It Might make Alot More Sense to go with a boat that Somebody Else has Already Eaten the Deprecation on......
If you buy an Entry Level Boat, You'll LOOSE Several Thousand $$, as Soon as you Signed the Papers....
That's Even Before you leave the lot, much less put Any hours on it........

In other words, You Can have a $20,000.00 boat for your $11,000.00 If you shop for a boat that's 1 or 2 years old........And,.. If You sell in Another couple of years, Your Loss will be Much Less........

A Brand New boat is going to Co$t you Big.......
A Brand New Bilgeliner will Co$t you Even Bigger.....Even though the initial check is $maller.........

Brought to you by the Voice of Common Sense,+ Reason.................... :D ;)
Good Luck.........

Re: Bayliner 175, Glastron 180?, or Maxum 1800MX

i came from a family that had a tight budget and the best boat my parents every could afford was a 16'sportcraft bowrider with a used motor.

i dont think they used anything but a chopper gun to build but it lasted from about 1972 till 1995 without becomeing a saftey hazzard and was still ok

i wanted a bigger boat and was able to spend more than them so i bought a maxum in 1995 it still shows no signs that its going to self destruct after 10 years of pounding through great south bay chop

i have owned one hand built premium sailboat a J-24 built buy TPI in Road Island and theres no dought that it is a much better boat than the maxum but i feel i am going to get to get my moneys worth out of the maxum

on long island i get to see a lot of boats and i have not seen any brand that in the worng hands wont turn to crap in short order and last a long time in the right ones

tommays
