Would you buy a FF/depth system with the same level of performance as a thru-hull transducer but without the need to drill a hole through your hull?

The FF system with this special system would cost an addition USD50.

The system could be used with ANY non-metallic hull boats.

Absolutely not. I think they should come up with a universal transducer (they differ slightly for each mfg.) and put them in the boats when they build them. Necesssary nav. equipment. I don't understand why people cry about a stupid little install. hole.

You have not given enough information to answer the question. To start with is the boat a type you can shoot thru the hull. If it is aluminum you can not do it. If it is fiberglass with a wood core or foam core you can not do unless you cut down thru the wood or foam to the solid figerglass. If it is hand lay up fibergalss then You may get it to work if they totally soaked the fiberglass mats. If not then still have to cut down to the solid fiberglass. Some boats mostly Bass boats have a special place made to mount the transducer. Most units I have seen you can trade the standard transducer for the shoot thru hull for very little or no cost. Key is to finding a place that has both type transducer in stock and sells the unit you want. Then if the transducer that comes with the unit is one the they sell anyway they will usually sell for the cost difference. The shoot thru I have seen were cheaper than the transom mount.

As Boatist says, there's a good variety available already. Maybe I don't fully understand your point?

Most people hereabouts prefer the external type - less hassle, and can be swapped to the next boat if required.

Re: Buying a new FF/depth thru-hull transducer

Hi, let me clarify my self. What I meant was, this new transducer would
•
• Work with ANY non-aluminium hull boat,
• Be mounted on the outside of the hull using epoxy or some other adhesive
• Have the same level of performance as a thru-hull transducer

What I wanted to get a feel for are there people who would specifically not buy a thru-hull transducer system purely for the reason that the installation process is tedious and requires the drilling of a hole.

I have heard that in-hull transducers are inferior in terms of sonar performance to to thru-hull transducers.

So the question really should be: Would you pay USD50 more for the performance of a thru-hull sensor without the inconveniance of having to drill a hole?

Thanks.

More and more low cost sounders are coming out with temp and speed wheel reading, how are you going to do that without the ducer touching the water.
Now,if only the makers would get together and come out and make a standard!

My take on what you're getting at is ..If a transducer could be bought that would EQUAL the performance of an outside mounted or hole mounted, would it be worth the Extra money to have one of high enough quality to shoot thru hull......heck yes it would be worth it.

nzkb,

What's your angle in all this?

I detect something more than just a troll for information. Are you involved in some way other than just fishing/boating interest?

Re: Buying a new FF/depth thru-hull transducer

Hi,
I really wish there was a way to post pictures on this forum...

What I am talking about is a transducer which is essentially wireless. It is still mounted under the waterline however as there is no wire to be attached to it, there is no hole.

This transducer would have the same level of performance as an existing thru-hull transducer minus all the hole drilling.

I am an electronics engineer and have an idea which could be used to develop such a transducer. I am trying to get a feel for whether there is any point developing this idea any further. This comes back to my original question:

Would a boat owner pay USD50 for a wireless transducer which has the same level of performance as a thru-hull transducers?
