This is an engine question but belongs here.
Let me now ask the question. I want to move my motor 1 inch higher than it is now. Its a bayliner with a Force motor. I was going to remove my motor anyway to polish the transom and add some strength to the area as everyone says it is a weak point on this boat. I disagree but I am not sure so I prefer to err on the conservative side.
How do I raise the rear area?
Do I place a 1x1 across the rear area and glass it in?
Re: Help with engine placement

Realgun, I had the same question. Currently my transom is lower than the brackets (hooks) on the motor about 2 inches. I was thinking about putting in a 2X2 strip across the top of the transom, then on the inside of the motor well putting in a 3/4 inch piece of wood from port to starboard even with the top of the 2X2.

Is not having the hooks on the OB bracket "hooked" on top of the transom a bad idea? Would having the four bolts be sufficient?

First of all what brings you to the conclusion that you need to raise the engine on the transom? Also you can check if your transom is weak by trimming the engine out to 45 degrees and pushing down heavily on the leg and seeing if there is any flex in the transom wall. If no flex then theres no problem and re-enforcing is a a wasted exercise.
You dont need the mounting bracket to hang over the transom edge. The four bolts are more than satisfactory to hold the engine in position.

Cheers,

Nicholas

Agree completely with Baysidemarine. If the four bolts holding the motor to the transom are not sufficient then the transom is in need of repair. Many motors are mounted in this way. I had the same concerns last year but after much research and observations found it was a common practice.

I was reading the Mercury Marine prop manual and this was suggested.
I want a faster speed and better performance from the hull. Also this is a cheap whay to gain performance. I have no issues with chine walking and want to be able to go a little farther on a tank of gas. I don't even know the max speed or the RPM of the motor yet. But I will and I can do about anything I need to make it work. (see my signature)

The Transom is is great shape if what you say is true. The engine is at a 45 now due to my changing the oil in the tilt/trim unit. I can climb into the boat over the engine and no flex however since most of the weight in the front of the boat is gone the bow will rise up till the engine touches the ground! No flex except me jumping off!

In the next few weeks keep watching the site in my sig I will be doing a lot.
I may actually introduce the boat to the water.

If the weather warms up a little.
