I have taken apart my carbs. to rebuild and found out that I need new reeds. My question to you all is How big a difference will it make to go from carbon reeds to steel reeds? I have found that my reeds have been replaced already. 175 Johnson 91'

Re: New Reeds

Does it have steel or fiber reeds now. Fiber reeds are usually more desirable because they idle better, have better transistion through the mid-range and some swear they pick revs on the top end. Another plus is if you split one, the piece passes right on through the engine where as the steel pieces are real bad juju. The down side of the fiber reeds is if the engine does a "lean sneeze", it burns the tips of the reeds.

c/6
Hooty

It has fiber now. And yes it did pass one threw
it. I was curious if it was worth the extra money.

Re: New Reeds

I personally think they're worth it. I've got three engines and they all have Boyesen Reeds. If it had swallowed a steel reed, we'd be talking about what make piston to put back in instead of which reeds. ;)

c/6
Hooty

Be careful big fish on whatever you do. I have read posts here that say that when you change reeds from steel to Boysen or vice versa that you must rejet the carbs. So check befor you do anything.

Now, now Hooty -- you know we wouldnt be talking about which make piston, we'd just be making sure he'd get the right part number. :)

SoLittle -- as long as the motor doesnt "sneeze" nothing is required. Thats about the only thing that hurts the Boyesen reeds. Well, there is one other thing that hurts them -- the reed stops -- but the instructions clearly warn aginst reusing them.

Re: New Reeds

Just my .02 cents worth on Boyesen Reeds.....

Seems the only time ya' need to rejet is when ya' do the V4s' and larger....unless the engine is new. This is all covered in the instructions which should be followed to the "letter".
