Question For the Wrenches

A fellow brought in a 90' 150XP. This is what he told me:<br /><br />"I was hooking up the battery and when I touched the ground cable to the battery I got a spark. So I hooked it up anyways. The wire from the Reg/Rec to the solenoid started smoking. So I disconnected the battery. Can you look at it and see whats' wrong?"<br /><br />Being the terrific fellow that I am, I said sure. Popped the hood and gazed under the flywheel to see mounds of goo (hard by now) laying under the flywheel area from the mother of all melt downs. The charging wire to the solenoid was fried. This is a 35amp system.<br /><br />Replaced the stator and Reg/Rec. Time for spark test. NO spark. What a surprise. Test the output from the timer base and got zippo. Nada. Nothing on any one of the timer base wires. Retested just to make sure with the same results. Got one on order to replace. The pack is probably gone to but won't know till I get the timer base in place.<br /><br />Question is....I know the stator took a super size shot of juice from the battery. Probably been melting down for a while. Could this have effected the timer base? I know anything is possible. Could the shot have backed up through the pack and made it's way to the timer base? This is a new one for me guys so be kind.....pleeeeeaaaassseeee!

Re: Question For the Wrenches

Its not your fault, the regulator rectifier fried. Happenns alot Dont know why it just does. Thats why a pro shop has them fill out a work order,You dont know the history on the motor maybe he charged the battery backwards and fried it. repalce the regulator and youll be OK

Re: Question For the Wrenches

Already did Rod.....stator also. And you bet it ain't fault. I called him soon as I saw the melt down and told him what we needed to do. He said OK. My question is, could this type of melt down go back and git the timer base also....possibly through the power pack.

Re: Question For the Wrenches

hello<br /> mmm a 90 XP.<br /> I dont think the the ign and the charging systems were seperate on that engine. is that the crossflow v6 with a single pack or twin packs? the timer may have been affected by heat. check the flywheel magnets as well. I have seen this one many times. usually its caused by a faulty battery cable connection that lights the system on fire. we used to call the water cooled 35 amp systems Flamers. but if the timer tests bad it tests bad. sometimes people dont tell ya about the last time they had it out and it died.<br /> good luck and keep posting also does the pack have the yellow/red wire from the soliniod to the pack?

Re: Question For the Wrenches

If the wires were melted and shorted to timer wires, but most likly heat from stator.

Re: Question For the Wrenches

Thanks guys....the engine is a crossflow with one power pack. I did check the flywheel mags and they all were strong. All connections are clean and tight. The leads to the timer base are in good shape. But Zippo from the timer base. Like I said....I ain't never seen a melt down like this one. MONUMENTAL!!
