i have a 1984 Johnson 50 hp. I have been told by the most recent owner that the carbs were recently rebuilt. The engine runs fine at idle, low speed and up to about 2/3 throttle. WHen I try to go full throttle, it wants to cut out. I have discovered that if at full throt. i hold teh choke in (which actually injects fuel at the back of the carb), the engine takes off and runs great - as long as I hold the choke on. I tried pumping the prime bulb without the choke, but that didn't help. The pump looks fine (no obvious holes in the diaphram) but I have not rebuilt it. Can anyone help?

Welcome to iboats laboat.

Just pull the carbs and go to the local Johnny/Rude dealer and get new kits and rebuild them. Pushing in the choke and it goes better means the high speed jets are most likely partially plugged. The carbs are simple to do. I have an 84' 50hp myself. Love the thing. And ya may want to condider a service manual. Generics will get ya' through the basic stuff and they can be gotten here at iboats. Or for the original OEM manual, check the link below.

Good Luck!

http://ww3.kencook.com/evinrudejohnsonmanuals/

Thanks obj. P.S. Just before I posted the topic, I ordered a manual from iboats.com.

Sounds like you have a little trash in one of the high speed jets, look at them, You might run decarb thru it the reeds might be gummed up.
