Hello guys,

My motor seems to run perfectly!! It starts on a dime, runs great all around, but my concern is that it smokes alot..Mostly at slower speeds..Is this just a low grade fuel/oil situation or is this just normal? It doesn't smoke like real real bad, but I do see consistent puffs at slower speeds..Thanks in advance!!

Matt

texas_whaler

Some smoke is normal if you troll around alot or run at very low speeds for a long period. I have the same year and HP motor, only in the Evinrude version, and it really does not smoke much at all, even when trolling. You might want to switch over to a synthetic oil, as they do not smoke as much as conventional oils. I pre-mix mine at 50:1, so VRO is not an issue on mine. Your VRO may be slightly over-oiling at low or idle speed. Many say to replace those VRO pumps every 6 years or so, just to be safe. Also, there have been improvements to them over the years.

Thanks Rick...I will try the synthetic oil..What kind should I get? Just regular synthetic oil at an auto parts store? My VRO pump has been disabled so no oil from there..What about fuel octane..Does it really make a difference?? Thanks again

Matt

Re: Johnson smoking

You should run 87 octane(Low Octane) fuel for best performance. You may also want to try a decarb of the motor, to make sure there are no deposits in the combustion chamber or the rings. I would try Penzoil semi-synthetic oil for starters, as it is readily available. You can get it at most marine stores, automotive or sometimes at Walmart. See if this helps. Of course, it must be an outboard rated oil, not automotive. Just thought I better throw that in. But I'm sure you know that.... Here is a link to de-carbing. I use the "Deep Crank" method myself, but both will work.
Decarb

Not that anyone here would think you didnt know what 50:1 is, but make sure you are mixing 16 Oz. to 6 gals. of fuel. Ive seen people just pour a quart in and think thats correct. The Pennzoil semi synthetic is a good step up, I just see no reason not to go ahead and use the full synthetic. It will even smoke less.

Matt,

You may be able to get outboard oil at automotive stores. Just understand that outboard oil is NOT the same as automobile engine oil.

Outboard oil will state that on the container.

In any case, look for the TCW-3 rating. If you do not see it, do not use it.

One pint (half quart) to six gallons of 87 octane. Octane rating has nothing to do with excess smoke.
