Sorry to post again, but have recieved no info on this problem. Put new thermostat in, motor had none in it. Cork gasket that fits behind thermostat is so thick that thermostat sticks out past the housing making it difficult to see how cover and gasket can go back on. Do i force it on and compress the cork or can I leave it out altogether? Don't want to mess up motor , finall y got it running like a dream and fish are biting. Thanks

If the gasket behind the T/stat is the right one and just causes the housing to interfere with going flush by just the gasket thickness, then I would say, install and tighten it up.There has to be some crush on the cork gasket or it is useless as a seal.

This is assuming that you have the proper T/stat and gaskets. Also insurte that sealing surfaces are free of old gasket residue or any crud.

Hi

I don't know much about engines, but mines a 1980 55, Yours is a 60 I believe, so they might or might not be similar. Anyway, I've just done a stat on mine and the washer/seal was a rubber one with a groove running around it into which fitted the rim of the stat where it seats on the head.
Don't know if this helps at all, but no one else seems to be answering you!

Thanks ob, thermostat is brown plastic and seems to fit well, will stop by dealer today to double check parts. Just don't want to mess something up.
