I have a 1981 johnson 35hp that starts up and runs for 10-12 minutes before completely stalling out. I can, with some extra effort, get the engine to turn over a few more times, but each time it immediately dies. After about four times turning over it will not start again. The first time it did this it died and kicked out smoke and choked several times. it seems most likely to be an air/fuel problem. correct? should i troubleshoot the carburetor first? ideas? this is all new to me. thanks for any leads/help.

You could be overheating. I'd see if you can keep your fingers on the head for a few seconds. How is the water flowing while the motor is running?

BTW, I'm in Orleans, MA
