I have a 1995 evinrude 88 special. I do not think the motor is charging my battery while it is running. How can I test this? What would the problem be?

Re: Battery not charging

Do a search, (top of the page), for charging. There are hundreds if not thousands of post on this topic.

Re: Battery not charging

Very simple test, using a voltmeter dc voltage, place red lead of meter on POS battery terminal, black lead on NEG battery terminal. First check battery voltage with motor not running and note voltage. Start motor and check voltage again, it should read higher than first reading, approx 12.7 to 14 volts.

Re: Battery not charging

Thank you aaero. I have no voltage jump, does this mean that my stator is bad?

Re: Battery not charging

I don't know what type of charging system you have, I will assume an alternator. The problem could be in the regulator/rectifier. Most auto part stores can test this for free or little charge. Of course you have to remove the alternator from the engine.

Re: Battery not charging

MDeVito,

The point was, do a search first before posting a question as there are alot of discussions on most topics, and on All the topics in your many post..

By doing so, you won't be waisting the time of those here who try to help others by having to re type what has already been written many times!

Same goes for starting a new thread for every question you have on the related topic.

Sorry you have such an attitude, but if doing a Search at the top of the page first is to troublesome for you, might I suggest you buy a manual?

Well as a matter of fact bradster.....I did do a search and it yielded no results worthy of the help I needed. So thank you for your suggestions anyways. I do have a manual also. :D

Re: Battery not charging

Then why didn't you read the manual.
It has the test procedures for the rectifier, regulator, stator, etc.

And after doing a search, the search engine stopped at 300 post that more than covered your question. Imagine that...
