I've just bought a Wellcraft 18DX c/w a Johnson 112SPL O/B. I'm new to boats. Boat was imported to UK from US a few months back. Question is - is engine 2 stroke or 4 stroke? How can I tell? Looks like 2 stroke to me. Guy I bought from didn't know - he knows even less about boat engines than I do. I've looked for an oil reservoir on the boat but can't find anything. Would the fuel have to be pre-mixed? What ratio?

The engine is a 2 stroke, give us the model number so we can tell the year.

You have a 1996 Model(ED) extra-long shaft(25"). Pre-Mix fuel/oil at 50:1 mix, if there is no oil injection. 1 pint TC-W3 oil per 6 Gallons of gas. Of course, you will have to convert these numbers... Look where the fuel line connects to the motor. If the oil nipple(If it has one), has been capped off, you do not have oil injection. Doubt that you did anyway on a "Special" motor. Those were pretty bare bones motors, but still very good motors, without the frills.

The previous owner, who only ran it a few times reckons it is was 4 stroke and thus didn't premix the fuel. So now that I know its a 2 stroke and requires the fuel to be premixed what damage would have been done by not premixing fuel with 2 stroke oil? Engine sounds fine, good compression and performance.

Paul
