I Desperately need a carburetor for my Johnson 3 cyl, 75, 1983 model j75ecte, ser# j5828787, the # cast in to the top of the carb is 328279

Now a little history on my problem, I have owned this motor since new, I let the motor sit for a couple of years and did not winterize it. Then last year I got the boat out and tried to start it but it would not run.

So I took the carbs off (They were full of water and brown soupy stuff) and rebuilt them, replaced all fuel lines, the tank & all fittings, the fuel pump, the motor started and idled fine and would go to about 1/2 throttle just fine, but more throttle would cause it to fall on its face and not get the boat up on plane.

Unless I would hold the key in the choke position, when the choke was held on the boat would get on plane and stay there as long as the key was held in keeping the enrichment circuit in the carbs on. these carbs are the enrichment type.

Anyway now is where the story gets sad, I rebuilt the carbs no less than 4 times.

Then gave the boat to a marine dealer who after I told story, said I was just not doing it correctly. He rebuilt the carbs twice same thing.

He then said the crank seal on top of the block was the problem, so I replaced it, same thing still the same problem.

So I took it to another marine dealer that said he was an expert on 3 cyl omc, he replaced all coils power pac, and all other stuff he could think of and of course he rebuilt the carbs, result? The same problem as we started with.

He then said the seal between the case halves must be leaking so I needed a complete rebuild. Well every thing else was new at this point so I took the boat to a shop that specializes in rebuilding marine engines Blackbird industries, near Pittsburgh, Pa nearly 5 hours away from me.

I talked to them about the problem and they laughed and said the rings were probably stuck on the piston causing #1 carb from working properly.

By the way I had narrowed it down to #1 very early in the hunt, because if I held my fingers in front of #1 carb with the throttle open all the way the rpm would pick up and the boat would stay on plane till I removed my fingers then the rpms would drop and the boat would fall off plane.

Blackbird said they would rebuild the carbs also after a vibrasonic tank cleaning and check everything, along with a complete rebuild.

At this point I was lost and was so frustrated.

I said go ahead and took the boat to them, they had quoted me 1450.00 but of course they called me and said my crank was bad and it end up costing me almost 2000.00 not counting my time to take it to Pittsburgh and go get it.

Well you guessed it same thing, the damn same problem.

So I called Blackbird and they said the carbs are not a part of there warranty, that I was on my own.

So here is what I have done, I pulled the top carb off and put it on the bottom cyl (swapped them) the problem then moved to the bottom cyl (surprise it was the carb all along).

I hate to tell you this but I am a mechanic, and build race Holley carbs for people at the drag strip on a regular basis. But this 2 cycle stuff is not my ball park.

So I thought I would rely on the experts, well after spending 3000.00 plus, the problem is the carb just like I thought in the very first place. CAN YOU HELP ME? I need a carb or an equlivent set of carbs This is a 75 hp, 15 inch, Johnson 1983 75 hp, 3 cyl, j75ecte, ser# j5828787, the # cast into the top of the carb is 328279
Please help if you can.
George Sellers
340 North 2nd Street
Wormleysburg, Pa 17043 717-979-4397 cell 1-800-382-1436 work, CVM Dodge ask for George

Call jack at Superior Marine (800-338-9281) and just get a complete set from a newer motor if he doesn't have the 83 model. I'd use newer ones anyway.

Good luck!

Re: I Need a Shrink?? or some real help!!

George.... It would have been a help if that lengthly post was broken up into paragraphs. To many of us, trying to read a long, one paragraph post.... well, it's a real hassle.

However, it appears that you know the problem is the carburetor. I find it strange that the mechanics that worked on the engine previously failed to diagnose that problem.

Pertaining to the affected carburetor, did you or anyone else actually remove the brass fixed high speed jet that's located in the bottom center portion of the float chamber to manually clean it? Or if it couldn't be removed, to clean it where it's at with a solid piece of wire rather than to depend on a solvent doing the job?

I've yet to find a carburetor that couldn't be cleaned unless someone actually jammed foreign particles in a passageway... and that's not likely. I'll check what I have to see if I might have a carburetor with that cast number you mention and get back to you.

As a last resort, I'd like to see that carburetor if you would ship it to me. I find it hard to believe that it is not fixable.

Dhadley, I called Jack and he said he would check for me, he sounded to me like he did not think so. If I hear back from him I will let you know.

Joe Reeves
Yeah paragraphs, When everyone else was in english I was under a car - Ha Ha

Sorry about that, Trust the fact that the carb is clean, I will send it to you if you want to pull your hair out. Mine is almost all gone.

I removed all jets including the one in the float bowl, and even switched bowl's at one point, I have a fresh 5 gal carb cleaner agitate tank and compressed air.

Last night I removed the carb again and checked everything with a very strong magnifying light, checked the body for cracks with compressed air and soapy water, could find nothing wrong, checked all the lead plugs for leakage found none. Used wire gauges, Made sure all jets were removed and checked for correct size and were comletely clean and bright. (also checked one of the good carbs as to jet size to make sure I did not get them mixed up) 69 main, 53 idle same as the good one.

Carefull bowl removal allowed me to see the fuel level in the float bowl is correct and clean.

Keep in mind that when I moved the problem carb from the top to the bottom the problem moved from the top to the bottom with it.

Yes, I changed all fuel lines and a new tank, I have isolated the problem to #1 carb, but I also find it very hard to belive I can not find the problem with it.

Yes, two marine mechanics also first told me it was a carb problem, and I was just not a outboard mechanic, but after they rebuilt them a total of three more times, and replaced almost everything else they could think of, they changed thier tune to find something else, which cost me a rebuild to chase the ghosts.

No one jammmed anything in anywhere, as I have owned this motor since new.

I totaly understand your otpimism, please keep the ideas and questions comming, I am lost and I really appreciate all the help.

Joe Reeves
send me your address and I will gladly ship you the Linda Blair of carburetors.

If anyone knows where I can get a 1983 Johnson 75 hp Carburetor The number cast in the carb is 328279 and the model of my motor J75ECTE, ser#J5828787
Thanks again
George

If the problem follows the carb.... gotta be the carb. Yes, I'd like to see it. Contact me at my email address below and I'll give you my mailing address. I don't want to list it on the forum.
