Hi All,

1985 Evinrude 30HP manual-shift/rope-start.

While removing Gearcase from Lower Unit, the forward stud is stuck/frozen/stubborn. I did some pounding and rocking (not enough to bend driveshaft) and that stud is just not giving up. This is probably first time it's been separated, so there's been plenty of time for stud to become one with Lower Unit. I've got replacement part numbers for the stud, nut, and bushing, but what is a good way to work it out?

I guess I could get a hacksaw in between and cut the stud, but I'm afraid that would bugger up the joint between gearcase & lower unit. Also, I'd still be faced with getting the stud out of the lower unit.

I may have already damaged the stud/threads beyond repair though I'm trying to be carefull.

Any suggestions?

Thanks very much :)

heat... apply heat with a torch, any torch, it will expand the aliminum but not the bolt, and keep it saturated with some type of penetrating spray like liquid wrench or whatever.... just dont brake anything, and use tapping out the old bolt as a last resort

m ikey

That makes sense. I used torch last night but heated the bolt. I'll give it a shot and focus on heating up the aluminum around it.

Thanks!

You be darn careful with that torch. Aluminum melts and will fall away without any warning. No color changes or anything. One second all is fine, the next second its too late. A small propane torch isn't likely to melt anything, but Mapp or Acetelyne will. What you were doing by heating just the stud will get as good a results as will heating the aluminum. Don't loose your patience with this thing. Just keep working at it and it will come loose.

Woohooh, after about 10 cycles of heating and pounding, ah got it! Front part of anti-ventilation plate's a bit sagging, but not enough that a straightening will weaken or break it.

I've always had a propane torch lying around the garage but never really needed it for something like this. It works!

Appreciate the heads up, Walker. I'll keep that in mind in future "heatings" with AL and any big gun torch larger than my "home improvement" propane torch.

I just hope I didn't bugger the stud up too much. It might be salvageable with the right die.

Thanks again!

Great, now you should be able to get that stud out and replace it. If it won't screw out with good vicegrips go back to the heat deal.
