Hello there,
I was wondering if it's okay to use after market gears(I've heard to stay away from them),and if it is okay to replace a pinion and forward gear with after market and re-use the original reverse gear?I just don't understand why you must replace front gear with the pinion, yet can re-use the reverse gear, they run together at all times. Any views on this topic would be appreciated.
Thanks.............D

The pinion gear is thrusting it's power to the forward gear, that is where the power is at. At this time the reverse gear is acting as an idler, but also acting as a support for the pinion gear. These gears are cut on a bevel, they are call"d a bevel gear, or a hyphoid gear, hence hyphoid lube.

Hello R.Johnson,
Based on what you have said, can just the pinion and forward gear be replaced with new ones (the pinion gear is the only one that shows any damage)and can they be after market or are we better off using OEM?
Thanks for your time........Dirk

There are aftermarket gears that wont last 10 hours. And there are aftermarket gears that are exactly (I mean exactly!) the same as OE gears. There are aftermarket gears that are better than OE gears. There were some OE gears that weren't the greatest.

To be safe, get your gears from a good supplier like Pro Marine. I know those are good ones.

Hello Dhadley,
Thanks so much for your response, guys like you who take the time to help out guys like me, who they'll likely never meet,is what gives this bulletin board the great "feel" that it has.I will feedback what I can for others to learn, from my mishaps. If anyone has an opinion on what are good after-market and bad after-market parts, for the johnson 115hp 1996 looper,it would be interesting.
Thanks.....Dirk

I agree with Dhadley. A matched set of gears (pinion/forwared gears) will set ya' back about $260 American from Bomby. But I do trust their parts.

You can also check iboats store for your gears. If you have questions as to who makes them, give them a call and they will help. Check the Mega Mall at the top of the page and search for "gears".
