I have an 2001 Evinrude 225 ficht. I'm having trouble in the mid range rpms and a little weak at top end. The engine skips and hesitates, although it's good out of the hole and idles fine. My top rpm is a little lower than norm at 5500. I was getting up to 5950 per my floscan and boat tach. I have not used the boat in two years. Upon puting away I stablized the fuel (105 Gal) and fogged. The odd thing is the first trip out the boat ran like a champ with the old plugs (short trip 6 gallons of fuel). Second trip the engine skiped and hesitated and use twice as much fuel as normal. At this point, I removed the old plugs (I did noticed the center cylinder plug on the port side was wet (all the rest were dry, (Anything?)I put new plugs in the engine (they are indexed and within 90 degrees of the injector). The boat runs better but still not right. My fuel consumption is a little higher than normal per floscan, and still have engine skips and hesitation. Most noticble a mid range rpms. The fuel filter was changed prior to the first trip. Please help!!

Just a thought.. But I learned the plugs should be pointed at the injector or a maximum of 45'passed the injector at the port side (3 to 6 o'clock) and on the other side also at the injector or a maximum of 45'BEFORE the injector (6 to 9 o'clock). It can be your 90'range is too wide. Indexing the plugs correctly is VERY VERY important on this engine. Otherwise it starts to miss, skips, etc and you can't get maximum RPM.

Because your engine runs better with the new plugs I do think the problem is plug related, but that some aren't positioned perfect enough.

Thanks for repliing I've been waiting for someones reply!!! Since I wrote last, the plugs have been positioned "perfectly" facing the open end at the injector on the respective bank of cylinders. This task was a lot of trial and error moving plugs around. Unfortunatly, the problem still exsists. I would have to say, maybe a very, very small change for the better. I can't think of anything else I could try without bringing it to the dealer. 3 week turnaround time!!!!!! Any other suggestions before I pull the boat? thanks...

Well, I pulled the boat and brought it to the dealer. After 6 hours of labor charges the told me they couldn't find anything wrong with the boat. They said they went through the motor and all checks out ok. There were 2 codes, 1 low oil alarm at 10 hours and 1 intake air temp off at 85 hours (Both codes I caused myself.)The dealer contacted Bombadier whom informed them if all checks out to erase the map system and download the new software. (dealer tried three times and was unable to install new software) Dealer Rep came out and completed the software install himself. During thier trial runs they were able to reach 5550 at wot and said the slight hesitation that can be felt from 3000 to 4000 rpm's is just indicitve of the engine. ("They all run that way")and also advised some of that could go away if I used a ss prop. (Don't ask me how?)Another point that was made is that my 01 225 ficht is now, no different that a brand new 225 e-tec (The only changes were in the map system) My main question is why prior to my engine problems, could I obtain 5950 wot and now only 5550. Nobody can answer that! And also the motor did have a slight hesitation at purchase but only between 3000 and 3500 rmps. Now I have a 1000 rpm range and a 400 rpm loss at top end. What gives!!! To thier credit the engine is 90% better then when brought in but I believe still not just right.

One last thing, I also can't obtain the same nmpg as before. Could achieve 2.60. Now at best 2.35 nmpg.
