I know the simple answer is to look at the oil level in the tank, but it takes a while for the level to go down and i didnt like the look of the plugs on my 1986 johnson 110 the other day , they were light gray /white (TIPS) Ive since add a little oil to every tank of gas , would this make it to rich ?

The plugs should look tannish or sort of white.

If you are concerned-do this.

1. Pour the appropriate amount of oil (TCW-3 rated)in the tank to make a 50:1 ratio.

2. Mark a line on the oil tank and run the engine as you normally would.

If the oil level drops, you're good to go.

When I was in doubt as to the VRO on my 40 hp, I ran 50:1 mix for a few tanks. It didn't seem to cause any problems.
Running the 50:1 mix is recommended by OMC when performing tests of the VRO system. I seem to recall that they recommend running the 50:1 mix for a while during the break-in period as well.
If at all in doubt, I would definitely run the 50:1 mix until I was sure the VRO was working properly.
Maybe a test of your alarm circuit would be a good idea. If the VRO is not delivering oil, you should have gotten an intermittent alarm. Mine was about 1 second duration with about 1 second between them.

Charles

You should also make sure that the vro is delivering the correct amount of oil. Any easy way to do this is to mark the current oil level in the tank with a piece of tape (make sure the tank is level), then add an additional 16 oz of oil to the tank and place another piece of tape at the new higher mark. Fill an external gas tank with exactly 6 gallons of fuel and then run the engine on open water until the tank is half empty. If the vro is working correctly, the oil level should be half way between the two marks. This isn't an exact science, but it should give a good estimate on the oil consumption.

To make an accurate test of oil consumption, you need a lenght of clear plastic hose of 1/4" diameter, tye-strap this hose to a 1 foot ruler. Disconnect the oil line to the engine. Connect the clear plastic line to the engine, and fill with oil, while running on a 50-1 mix. The oil in the clear plastic tube should drop 1" in about 6 pulses of the pump. This is much easier measured with a low reading vacuam guage mounted in the fuel inlet line. Every time the guage peak's, and fall's back, this is one pulse. Some people can feel the pump pulse without the guage, I can't.
