Hey, i was just wondering what some of you who rent slips pay for the season? I live in NJ and for me to rent a slip from april - oct, for my 18' boat, it would cost me from $1,000-1,500, at a nearby lake(LK Hopatcong). That seems kind of expensive and i'm wondering if it's even worth it, considering i live about 25 minutes away. What do you guys think, a decent price or not worth it?

Re: Boat slips

It all depends on your personal preference.

Do you want to deal with trailering, launching, retrieving and trailering home your boat every time you wanted to take the boat out? If this doesn't bother you then it may not be worth it.

If your boat was in the water, would you use it more becuase it would be very easy to go for a quick spin? If you answered yes to this question then it may be worth it.

I keep my boat down on the Mannesquan River in NJ, and pay almost $2,900 for the season. To me it's worth it because there are limited public ramps available, so there's always a traffic jam. I want to be able to go out on my boat whenver I want and not have my boating schedule dictated by the availability of the ramp.

Just my $.02.

Re: Boat slips

I pay $1200 per year to keep my boat at the lake. It is in a building on a rack. Year before last I kept it in the water in a slip for the boating season, this was $500 every 4 months. Keeping it in a slip was OK but the boat stayed pretty dirty.

I used to trailer my boat. I only live 5 minutes from the lake but it still took me 30 minutes to get ready, then 30 minutes to launch the boat, retrieve when done, etc. I felt like if I went to all the trouble to hook up the boat and launch it that I had to spend the day at the lake. I always tried to be done before dark because I didn't like loading the boat and putting it up at home if it was late.

Now I have no problem with running down to the lake in the evening to go for a ride for just an hour or maybe just hanging out at the lakeside bar with friends and listening to the band until after midnight.

Having done it both ways for several years I get a lot more use out of the boat by having it at the lake and not having to worry about hauling it in and out everytime I go out.

Re: Boat slips

It probably depends on how much you plan to use it this season...?? If the plan is darn near every weekend including a few jaunts after work, it makes sense to get the slip...The hassle of waiting and launching the boat every weekend would be painful..Not to mention the risk of breaking something during the procedure...If looks like once a month, than I'd say 1500 bucks worth "investing" in new toys for the boat...

Jamie,

That doesn't sound too bad. Dredge Harbor Marina in Delran, NJ (Delaware River) charges $1095 for a 20' boat April 15 through October 15. Most Prices in this area are from about $950 to $1100 at the larger better equipped Marinas (Pool, game room, etc.) to about $600 to $850 at the dock only facilities (including private docks).

As Billnicole said, it's more at the Jersey Shore.

Re: Boat slips

I've been keeping mine (27' Cabin) in a slip for the past 4 seasons. The docks cost me just under $500. This year the dock I liked because of the privacy is made off limits to seasonal boaters. So I was forced to dock at the main marina. At least now I have shore power and that dock costs me $930 for the season.

Now the docks for access to lake Erie is a whole different story. For seasonal slippage is from $1500 on up.

Keep in mind when you leave your boat in the water for the season, be prepared for some nasty marine growth on your hull and outdrive. Anti-foul paint does real good on prevention of the growth.

Another thing to consider is the security at the docks. I've heard some really scary sea stories about people having there boat stolen or stuff from the boat ripped off. Just something to keep in mind. My boat is secure when the cabin is locked up, but usually I would find empty beer cans up on my bridge. I know they weren't mine because I don't drink Miller products.

Re: Boat slips

Thanks everyone for your input. There are so many things to consider. I think i'm going to go ahead and rent a slip.
I think boating will just be more enjoyable without the hassle of trailering, unloading and loading back up. Less things on your mind, less things to forget and worry about= more time on the water. Plus like someone mentioned, i would probably get alot more use out of my boat since it's simply, already in the water for you. Just hop in and go!
Also, by no means is it cheap to trailer your boat all summer. Between gas in your tow vehicle and ramp fee's, it probably cost me an average of $30+ a day last summer W/O fueling up the boat. I plan on using it every weekend, so the costs add up quickly.
As far as a build-up of of marine growth on your hull goes, i would take it out every once in a while and give it a good cleaning. Not a big deal.
Any other pro's or con's, keep em coming!
Jamie

Re: Boat slips

Prices in central NJ on the bay are typically $100 a foot. Down here in southern Jersey it's m ore like $35 a foot. At my dad's bulkhead it's $0 a foot (for me and him!). :D

I trailered my 19 footer for a year, and if I didn't have the free dock and if I still had the 19 footer which I could easily launch and retireve myself I would still be trailering. That's just me.

Re: Boat slips

up her in northern NJ on the Hackensack River I pay 800.00 from May 1 to Nov 1. I am a vol firefighter here in town so the slipmaster lets me have the slip for a discounted rate. It's usually 1000.00 a season for everyone else. I can get to NY harbor in a short time when I want to fish or cruise and I HATE to trailer. Always afraid that someone is going to crash into my boat (I'm 10 minutes from NYC, they drive crazy here!) If you like to go out quickly and like the idea of not trailering it might be a good idea for you if the price is right. However maintenance issues will be a bit more so if you leave the boat in the water for the season. Keep the bottom well painted in antifoulant and inspect zincs often. I guess it's a matter of cost and personal choice. ;)

Re: Boat slips

I have been in a marina for the last 5 years now. In my opinion, even though coming up with $1200 bucks a year isn't easy... I think it is the best money I spend all year. I use it WAY more than I ever would if I had to trailer it each time. Some of my most memeorable trips have been when I stopped by after work for an hour or 2. The river is usually calmest at this time and there is not all the traffic you see on weekends. Just hanging out on the boat in the marina is fun on days when the whitecaps are rolling. As long as the kids won't go hungry... my advise is DO IT.

Re: Boat slips

I pay $1350 for a slip at the Jersey Shore, 18 Ft boat. I can moor my boat from April 1st to October 31, as said above, money well spent. I am only 15 minutes from the slip, so its MUCH easier then trailering.

Enjoy
John
