Evinrude plug gap?

I am going to put new plugs in my 1997 evinrude 50 horse 3cyl. 2 stroke. The current plugs are champion QL78YC, my local dealer isn't overly friendly since I bought this boat instead of a used one he had for sale. I just got it Saturday and haven't gotten a shop manual yet. Can anyone tell me a good brand of plugs for this engine and the gap? I "heard" evinrudes don't like champions. Also what type and amount of lower unit oil should I use? Do they use the same gear lube as a mercruiser outdrive? I'm a newbie to outboards, I have always owned I/O's before buying this pontoon boat.

You heard exactly opposite. Do not use anything but Champions in an Evinrude/Johnson 2-stroke. Use the same plug number (or eqivelant Champion) and gap them at .030".

Use OMC/Bomardier "Hi Vis" gear lube. Replace the lower unit fill and drain plug seals when you service it.

That was quick! I can remember people bashing champion plugs since I was a kid using them in minibikes, I've never had a problem with them. Thank you for the info, I can't wait to get a shop manual, I hate not having all the engine specs.
