Evinrude 225 ficht (2001) How often should you change a water pump impeller? I have heard many different opinions around the docks. The dealer says every season.

Re: Water pump maintainence

It depends largely on the hours accumulated and the condition of water you normally run in.Every other season is when I do mine and I put between 60 to 80 hours per year and boat in salt water.I also replace T/stats exhaust housing seals as long as I have the lower unit dropped. Also a good time to inspect and or change the waterpump discharge tube seal.

Thanks ob,

I'll change it next time I pull the boat out. I currently have 80 hours over 3 seasons. I need to find a manual for 2001 evin 225 ficht. All publishers don't seem to go that new.

also if the boat is not run much the impeller gets hard and will fail.

If you want a shop manual, get the OEM one from a dealer. The 3rd party books are not too hot.

Bite the bullet and get the OEM manual. Worth saving the hassle, frustration, lack of info, and conflicting/incorrect info.

Well then ,you're due.Hope you keep your overtemp warning system and temp/water pressure guages calibrated and regularly tested because a waterpump issue isn't an if scenario ,it's a when.

Re: Water pump maintainence

OMC factory recommendation is that the impeller be CHECKED yearly. Gary B has an important point, though. All water pump impellers aren't created equal.

For instance, the impeller on the Merc 40twin/50four/65triple lower unit is VERY light duty compared to that on even an OMC 9.5. Further, the 50+hp OMCs have a overheat alarm, where the older Mercs don't.

We've all seen functioning impellers in motors that haven't been open in 10-20 years; and the OMC V4 is a great example. Very well-designed impeller there - thin in the bendy section of the vane (so it bends without generating too much stress), but fat wear strips out at the ends. On the other hand, boy it seems like half the Merc50s I see have the impeller already burned up (generally followed by the powerhead).

I'm not saying don't put one in - I always do. But on OMCs that people just ask me advice on, I bug them about the impeller (some people don't know they have one, or an overheat alarm), figuring they'll smarten up and get it changed pretty soon. On Merc 50s however I hit them over the head until they agree to do it immediately (actually I just show them a jar full of burned out Merc impellers).
