Check Engine light

1997 Stratos 282 vr 150 fast strike.Engine seems to run good, except that it loads up at an idle and will shut off after a few minutes.It can be immediately restarted.Throttle response is good and after reaching top speed at times the check engine alarm and warning indicator comes on.I have no manuals on the engine and would like any input as to what this could mean and/or in what instances the light would come on.Thanks

Sounds like fuel restriction, but we don't know enough about your engine or what tones the alarm is giving. VRO still hooked up?? Tone constant or intermittant beeps. Do you have a hot light in addition to the check engine light??

Loads up at idle in gear or out of gear??What alarm tone are you getting? constant tone,rapid short tones,or one tone every 20 secs? It matters.

Check engine light is fuel restriction, or bad vacuum sensor, that turns the light on.
