I'm going to have my dealer set my new eTec 75 for XD100 but I'm going to run the first reservoir of oil as the factory oil. Is this how it is normally done? I would have thought that the stock oil would have to be drained and replaced with XD100. I know these machines have a computerized break-in period where they use more oil at first.

I called evinrude(bombardier) and they said it wouldn't hurt it to have the computer programed for XD100 but running the stock oil at first. Just wanted to see what you guys thought of the idea.

What do these outboards come with from the factory? XD50?

The E-TEC outboards come from the factory with a small amount of XD-50 in them. It's up to your dealer to add oil at time of set-up. It is permissible to mix the Bombardier oils with out completely draining what you have in there now (probably the blue-ish color XD-50). Once it's mostly gone (say 1/4 tank or so), then add the XD-100 and have your dealer reprogram it for the XD-100.

The break in mode is the first 3 hours of operation over 2000 rpm. If you run it hard, it'll go thru the first tank of oil pretty quick because of the break-in, but once break-in is complete and you switch to XD-100, it goes a long way.

-John

The problem with taking it back for reprograming for XD100 is that its a 6 hour round trip to the dealer.

Then why didn't you specify to the dealer to put the XD-100 in it in the first place?

If the 6 hour trip is the problem, have you considered asking another dealer to program it for you? Try Lockemans in Detroit, they're at 7630 W Jefferson Ave, Phone: (313) 842-0268 talk with Dave, he's a pretty good guy.

-John

I know Dave and have done a lot of business with him, this is actually for my folks up in the middle of Michigan's upper penninsula. It will be set for XD100 from the word go(my dad is picking up the boat in Green Bay on Tuesday) the only question is whether it will have the stock oil or XD100 in the oil reservoir.

My dad's dealer isn't cooperating too well on a few issues and the oil thing is one of them. They're great untill they got his deposit on the boat. Now all of a sudden the dealer is going to charge him 2 hours labor for installing the fishfinder(purchased new from him)......I always thought that's why you pay for 'dealer prep'. I talked to the dealer on the phone about setting it up for XD100 and he gave me the run around saying it would be best to wait untill later.......my theory is that he just doesn't want to spend anymore time on a customer and he knows my father will never drive all the way back to the UP. But we are taking a stand and not taking the boat unless its set for XD100......enough is enough. It only takes 10 minutes or so; he probably already filled the oil tank and doesn't want to suck it out and replace it with XD100. I'm just happy I'm going up there to 'supervise' and get to break in the new boat. :)

The closest Johnson Etec dealer is still an hour drive away and would charge us for programming it(not covered under warranty).

I've grown up with J/E, and this ETEC thing is killing me.......Yea, I know, it's a new company(again), but these dealers are going to have to take a step to help the customer out in a situation like this and program it for you.....NO CHARGE, and say, "Hey, just give us a shot if ya ever need anything".
This is why Yammy and Merc are takin' a wide swath.
We've got 3 J/E dealers right here on Texoma, and ya see about 75-80 mercs per 'Rude or Johnson
Good Luck, and I hope they take care of ya like they should.

My folks just moved up to the rural Upper Peninsula last year, quite the difference in the way people do business compared to an urban setting like the Detroit area. Around here you would encounter something like this and go to another dealer.......up in the sticks there isn't much of a choice and those people seem to run their businesses knowing that they have the market cornered.

My father is an old businessman and I assure you that he won’t leave without the motor being programmed for XD100.

You’re right walleyehed, bombardier bought the company and supposedly improved the products....next they should fix the service.
