Won't go into gear

Hi<br />Before I enter my problem, where on the engine will I find the model #? It is 200hp Evinrude VRO.<br />Took the boat out 3 weeks ago and everything was fine. Last weekend the boat started fine but would not go into forward or reverse. Took off the linkage at the motor and both cables seem to move in and out correctly. Anyway to manually free the gear?

Did you manually try to move the shift lever on the motor, when the cables were diconnected and someone was turning the prop(If it will at all) at the same time and what happened? With the motor OFF, of course.. If this does not work, time to remove the lower unit and find out what's going on. Could be the shift shaft is the problem. Or it could be worse. Won't know until you get into it..

Thanks Rick<br />I'll try again. The prop turns because it is in neutral. The engine runs fine. Is removing the lower end an involved process or is it just removing bolts? The boat is in the water and of course I have taken the trailer apart to have it sandblasted and redone.

Model number will be on a plate or sticker on the transom bracket. Looks like this:<br /><br />
