No spark

I have a 1966 40 hp Johnson that I can't get running. I checked it for spark and there was none. I changed the coils and cutout switch. I also tried different plugs and different spark plug wires to no avail. Everything has been changed except the points and condensors. Could it possibly be bad condensors. HELP

Re: No spark

First try disconnecting and isolating the two wires that drop down from the armature plate. That is to say the two that are connected to the points. That should isolate the entire kill switch circuits. (and the run-away protection, so be careful!)

Are the points absolutely clean (cleaned with alcohol, or acetone, or brake cleaner)? Are you certain the flywheel key didn't shear (it would if you didn't tighten that nut to exactly 105ft/lbs)?
Are the ignition coils aligned with the bosses? Are the points adjusted to open exactly .020" when at their widest?

It could conceivably be the condensors, but I doubt both would be bad.

Good luck with it!

Re: No spark

Paul-- I disconnected the two wires and still no spark. The keyway is ok, the points are .020 and the coils are installed properly. I'm stumped. Tomorrow I will clean the points and try it again. Like you, I never heard of both condensors going at the same time.

Re: No spark

Hmm.. Flywheel magnet still magnetic? It ought to be strong enough to hold a medium sized slot screwdriver. Real scientific test eh?

Oh, by the way, you mention you replaced the spark plug leads. Don't use automotive type 'supressor' wire on these old magnetos. You'll still get spark, but some people have run into problems with misfiring at part throttle with them. Use metal core (0 ohm) wire only.

The armature plate isn't so loose that your loosing your points setting is it?
The top crank seal isn't leaking oil everywhere is it?

I'm just throwing stuff out here.

VICTORY- Thanks for the help Paul. It was the points. I tried a new set and it worked. Once again thank you for your time and help.
