later 1980's evinrude motor dies out coming to idle after wide open throttle. Doesn't seem to have conventional choking system...:"squiter bulb or primer" is available via pull out knob. Seems to run better in out posistion but I don't really understand the markings on cover. Should it be out or in and is it only an aid for starting? Changed the mix to 50:1 after reading this forum and seems to help a little. Also...how many "turns out" should I start with on the needle (low speed)? that is located behind the air horn above the diapragm?

Look upon the primer assy as one would look upon a regular choke system. Out primes/chokes. In disables it.

(Carburetor Adjustment - Single S/S Adjustable Needle Valve)
(J. Reeves)

Initial setting is: Slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Start engine and set the rpms to where it just stays running. In segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the S/S needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running.

Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

When you have finished the above adjustment, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.

Mixture is absolutely 50/1.

The carburetor may be fouled (common problem). If so, remove, clean, and rebuild it.

You have to push this squirter knob in once she is warmed up and ready to go. It's a combination choke and primer. On my previous 30 hp Johnson I would pull it twice. Start it up and then after about 10 seconds, push it back in.

If this doesn't work, I think you may have a gummed up carb from leaving some gas in the carb over winter. Try spraying some carb cleaner in the carb and some gas additive cleaner to a fresh tank of gas. If that doesn't work, you will need to take off the carb and clean it out throroughly.

Some will say to have the carb rebuilt....which it may or may not need. Most of these complaints are from the gas oil mixture left in the motor for many months and never having added some stabil at the end of the season.

Re: 8hp carb problems-dies out

Thanks for the advice. I'll get to work and see how she runs. I took of carb the other day and there was a rotten piece of hose in there. it wasn't connected to the float...but another piece ? that sits on the bottom of float bowl and inside the float. Seems to be pressure fit when the bowl is back on. Thanks again. Great forum.
