Can someone please help in describing how to remove the prop seal from the bearing head?
It's sandwhiched behind the bronze bearing and I'm not sure which end comes apart.
thanks for your help!
Scott

Are you sure about this, the seal is behind the bearing? The seal or seal retainer should be the last part before the shaft exits the gearcase, otherwise it wouldn't keep water out of the bearing and the oil in.
By "behind" the bearing do you mean it's on the prop side or the gearcase side of the bearing?

On the frontside of the bearing head there is an alum. cap. Does the seal come out that side? If so how do you remove the cap? Or does the seal comes out the backside where the bronze bearing is? (see picture)
Thanks for any info.
how do you remove the seal retainer? Is it pressed in or is it threaded?

I'm not sure about this - I have no direct experience, but I belive the blue ? thing is part of the seal itself and it fits over the gearcase head, which is the rest of the aluminum body. Have a look here and see what I mean.
Also, the seal's dimensions should be 1-1/8" OD x 1/4" wide for a 5/8" shaft. You should be able to confirm which part is the seal by that.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

I think that my motor is similar enough to yours to say that Paul is right, the "blue?" is part of the seal, it's the bit that retains the actual rubber seal itself, the new seal should have that bit (try to check first) so it doesn't matter if you damage it taking it out.
There is a special tool available, but if it's not in too tightly you may get it out by levering with a pair of (big) screwdrivers, take care not to damage the bearing head though as they are expensive.
A bit of heat may help, or if you're really unlucky it may need to be machined out as mine had to be!

Fixed it. Stupid link detection stuff. Shoulda hit my reload button to double check...

It's a picture of a '58 10hp lower unit, but it's actually similiar to yours.
