1994 175 hp Evinrude Alarm not working

When I turn the key before I start the motor most often the alarm does not come on to give me an indication that the system is working. Is there any typical problem for this and should I look at replacing the alarm right off etc. I have tried grounding the tan wire and that didn't kick off the alarm either. Sometimes it works, but not consistent so I don't know if I would have motor trouble until it was too late.
Thanks

Welcome
First I would check all of the connections to the alarm horn. That beep you hear when turning ignition key is to verify its working. No beep = No work. The alarm is in the control box and relatively inexpensive to replace. Not advisable to use without working alarm.
Good Luck

Thanks for the quick response. So if I hook up a multimeter at the wire connections in the control box and it gets the voltage with the tan wire grounded just pop in a new alarm. Are they something you can typically pick up at west marine/boat world etc. I don't believe my controller is factory OMC.
Thanks again
