Was able to start by adjusting the points through a port in the flywheel. Runs very smokey and idles rough and surging. What is the next step? Thanks for the advice to check the spark first.

With a puller that acts on the three screw holes near the hub. Never with one that pulls from the sides!
An economical solution is to use an automotive harmonic balancer puller with three 3" long 1/4"-20 high grade bolts and washers.
If you find the ignition coils under there cracked, replace them. Iboats PN 18-5181 works well. You'll need a repair manual to set up them and the points properly, as well as for the torque spec for the flywheel nut. And you'll need it for all the little maintanace tasks you'll want to do on that outboard once you get it going good. :)

Good luck!

Evening again, JB!

Give it up!!! Send me the motor for parts!!!!!

Just kidding!!!!

You do need the puller to get it off. A harmonic balancer puller works quite well.

If you are like me and only a hobbyist, I buy some tools of second grade materials. I've got great Mastercraft Life time warrany sockets and wrenches but specific tools that I will use at best infrequently, I buy second grade from low end stores and flea markets.

A puller should cost you less than $20 CDN dollars. It will work fine a couple of times but be careful and don't stress it.

A decent puller is over $100 and I don't think it's worth for the guy like me that will pull the fly wheel 10 times in a lifetime.

Hi,
I also have a fleetwin I'm trying to get running. I got my flywheel off 2 days ago by a less than preferred method so I want to ask. Can you de-magnetize it by hitting it with a hammer? (I did know enough to use a brass punch)
Trying to learn!

Thanks,
Don

Re: Evinrude Fleetwin 7.5

I doubt it DonJuan - your shock wouldn't be directly against the magnet. The soft aluminum and brass would protect it.
If you hammered against the crankshaft, than the threads for the flywheel nut may be damaged. They can be fixed with a die or a thread file. Conceivably, this can also cause internal damage but it's unlikely if you were not overly agressive. Still, that's a good enough reason to use a proper puller.
If you hammered against the rim, carefully inspect the hub around the inspection ports (if equipped) to make sure there's no cracks. Also, make sure the flywheel didn't end up bent.

Good luck, and welcome to Iboats! :)

PS - I seem to remeber the 'test' for the flywheel magnets is if it will hold a medium sized slot screwdriver, then the magnet is ok. I cannot find where I read that tough.

Running smokey is an indication that you're running rich. You don't say what year or model number your 7.5hp is - could you provide it?
If you're running with a single line fuel tank (and fuel pump) what happens when you pump the primer bulb? Does it ever get hard?

Re: Evinrude Fleetwin 7.5

There will be a fair amount of smoke for that motor if you're running the proper 24:1 mixture, and particularly if you're running it in a barrel. Rough running and such is also common when running in an unventilated barrel as the motor will suck in its own exhaust. Run it outdoors, with a fan blowing fresh air at the face of the motor. Better yet, run it on a boat...

Make sure you install a new waterpump impeller - available over the counter any many places, including here at I-boats (part #18-3001). You'll have to remove the powerhead to release the shifter rod from the shift handle - not as big a deal as it may sound, but make sure you replace all of the washers and spring at the top of the driveshaf tin the correct order and grease the splines with waterproof grease.

- Scott
