Re: solenoid WILL NOT START
Here's a couple of thoughts:

1.) On cars and a motorcycle, I've been able to arc a large screwdriver across the terminals of a solenoid before. If the starter is engaged when you do this, but the starter won't turn when you turn the key, the solenoid is probably bad. Be careful though as the engine could start when the starter engages the flywheel.

2.) I thought I had a bad starter a while back on an '87 90 horse evinrude because when I turned the key the starter would engage but not turn the fly wheel. The starter would just click and get stuck with the starting gear on the fly wheel. Turned out my lower unit was going bad (really bad). The starter couldn't turn the flywheel because the lower unit was holding up the motor. After the lower unit broke a shaft and a few gears, etc., the flywheel froze up solid. Ouch. Rebuilt the lower unit but I would still get a click once in a while, but now the starter wasn't engaging at all. Just a click of the solenoid. Turned out the rectifier/regulator was bad and not charging the starting battery. A couple of starts would draw the battery down enough to make it so weak that it wouldn't turn the starter to spin the flywheel. Replaced R/R and everything has been good since. Took a lot of time to find all the bugs though in the process. (Dealer mechanic claimed it was faulty battery last year, then bad connections, etc., etc.) I don't go to that dealer any more.

Good luck,

Mark
Minneapolis
