Hello,
I have a '65 Johnson 9.5hp yesterday when i was running in the middle of the lake it slowed down and stalled. I went to try and start it again and it seemed hard to pull the first time. Then it became easier and after about 8 pulls it started again. It ran fine for the rest of the hour it took me to cross the lake.
Whats up with that?

Sounds like you overheated and the engine partly seized. If you don't know for a fact that they're good, you should replace the thermostat and water pump impeller.

The most likely thing though is your water pickup got fouled by a bag or some weeds. You didn't notice what the water outlet was up to when this happened did you?

I didnt notice what the outlet was doing. In the past once in a while it would slow down while I was going at full throttle. But it would always pick back up again. Also when this happened I had been going at full throttle for about 30-40 minutes.

I would go over the cooling system if I were you. That sort of sounds like the thermostat is sticking. It's in the head, under the plate held in with three screws.
When an engine overheats, the pistons expand to the point where they start dragging on the cylinder's walls. That's what made it hard to pull start. Once they cooled off, they shrunk to a loose fit.

how much water should be coming out of the outlet? Its not a steady stream it more coughs out of the hole.

That's what it should look like on that outboard. The water flow is being restricted by the thermostat, so how much water you see coming out the hole depends on the state of the thermostat. If you overheat, you'll likely see steam coming from that hole, since the engine tempurature climbs to the boiling point of water.

these engines dont have a steady stream of water they splatter out the hole.i think its time for a thermostat and waterpump they are pretty cheap and easy to do on these little motors. also what is your mix 50;1 ? have you decarb the motor might wanna do that also

Hi Tony,

I've got five of the 9.5HP and the impellers won't do the job after a few years. Best to replace them every year or two, even if they look OK.

The thermostats will usually work as long as the cooling circuit is clean, but look at the condition of the tube below the thermostat while you have the thermostat out. If it has built up deposits, you will want to clean the whole cooling circuit.

I pulled the thermostat and there is some rusty colored flakes in the tube. How do I clean the system?

My Mix is 50:1 I have not decarbed the motor, I am having trouble finding sea foam in my area (I live in Canada). I have a thermostat and impeller on order. Where is the water pump located?

Re: 9.5 hp stalled

the water pump is in the lower unit between the mid and lower unit on the drive shaft u need to pull the lower unit to get to it. 50:1 is good for them little motors and u will have some smoke come from that hole after u shut it down because there is not just water leaving that hole there is exhuast also. u might wanna check a local marina or lawn mower place for the decarb spray they should have it. also look for an original shop manual for that motor it will help u out a ton they are all over ebay.

Re: 9.5 hp stalled

I used to use TSP (Tri Sodium Phosphate) that I got from a hardware store and just dumped it in a plastic trash can with water and ran the motor in it. Some fellows told me they use dishwasher detergent, which also doesn't foam up.

I've used SaltAway for the last couple of years with very nice results, but then I'm running in salt water all of the time.

I don't know what the recommended flush is, so maybe someone will jump in here with a better idea.

If you are going to replace the impeller, I would recommend that you replace the whole pump. The kit isn't that much more money. You can probably get that from our host - check above under parts.
