I'm looking for some information on an Evinrude Lightwin motor. All I have is a serial number. Can anybody give me the HP and year of the motor, and any othere relevant info, from just the serial number? The serial number is 3012-06311. I believe it is 3hp but not sure.

Re: Looking for Evinrude motor information

3012 is the model number
Evinrude 3012
Year: 1952-1954
HP: 3
WOT RPM: 4000
Displacement: 5.27 cu.in. = 86.5 ccm
Cylinders: 2
Weight: 32 lbs. = 14.5 Kg
Gear Ratio: 12:20
Spark plug: Champion J6C gapped at .030" (was J6J).
Fuel/Oil mix: 24:1 87 octane gas to TCW-3 rated outboard oil (ignore the decal about SAE30)

1952 Lightwin
1954 Lightwin
From the old OMC Site

That's an insanely great little outboard that was made in one form or another up into the 80's. I'm currently fixing up a 1972 variant for myself. :)
Yours is the first model ever produced.

Nice 3hp tuneup article.
Good luck! :)
PS - there's a fuel filter up inside the tank. Remove the brass nut above the fuel petcock to find it. It's often overlooked and clogged.

Re: Looking for Evinrude motor information

Wow! Thanks for all the great info. It's actually not my motor, it's my Grandfathers. He bought it for $100 a few years ago and has only used it a couple of times. It runs great, he started it for me last weekend when I was up at his house. He had it in a barrel of water. He's probably going to be selling it, that's why he wanted the info on it.

Wow! is right. That was a fast response. Ok. I've got an Evinrude 55 HP, model no. 557730, serial no. E0001529. I don't know the year. I would like any info possible, like number of strokes, cylinders, etc. I am new to boating but am fairly technically oriented.

CaseyStengel

I don't find all that info on the site, but it is a 2 Cylinder, 2-stroke, 1977 Model. Oil mix is 50:1. Spark Plugs are Champion QL77JC4 gapped at .030.

Thanks Rick.

What site could I have gone to? Any recommendations about repair manuals? Would the engine be too old to bother?

Thanks again.

Re: Looking for Evinrude motor information

If the engine has good compression then it's worth bothering with. Test that first. If you're technically oriented, spend the extra dough on an OEM repair manual. You can get reprints from the following places:
TheOutboardWizard
Mastertech
Marine Engine
Ken Cook
Good compression would probably be over 90psi, but most importantly have no more than a 10% varience between cylinders. There are no published compression specs for these engines.
