2000 15 HP Johnson electric start

There is a small hole on the lower unit just above the prop shaft on the left side. It has some corrosion around the hole and will leak water for a few days after use. It looks like maybe there was a screw in there at one time, maybe. Does anyone know what this hole is for and if I have a problem? Motor runs and works great. Motor has been in salt water a few times in the past. Thanks for any info, Steve

If it what I think it is, it is the exhaust chamber drain.

Run a toothpick in and out of it a few times to keep it clear.

Thanks DJ,
I went to a marina today and looked at some engines and the new johnson 15s do have the hole. I think you are right. I am going to clean off the rust and paint it. Keeping the hole clear of course. On a side note I noticed the new johnsons say bombardier on the top. What company really makes these things? Anyway thanks again, Steve

bud,

The 2-stroke Bombardiers are built by Bombi in the US, for the most part. Bombardier is a Canadian Company with strong US financial ties.

The fourstroke Bomby products are built, in part, by outside builders. Suzuki being the most prominent.
