Re: Fuel pump??

1. Engine dies about 30 seconds after start.
2. Engine will run if you keep pumping the primer bulb.
3. Engine runs okay at low to medium speed, surges at high speed.

Good luck. :)

Re: Fuel pump??

Easiest way to test is with a separate portable tank attached to the inlet of the fuel pump. That will tell you if you have a problem with the fuel pump/carbs, or if you have problems with your hoses, tank, filter, etc.

Re: Fuel pump??

Success!!! It started up fine with my friends tank so I went and bought a new one today!!! Runs like a champ!! Mine was old and cracked and aparently had leaks as it also had water in the fuel!! Ouch...

I had my VRO disconnected a while back and I was wondering if the mechanic should normally install a standard fuel pump in there after doing that??Is this true and where would it be if he did install one??Thanks

Re: Fuel pump??

You can disconnect the VRO without replacing the fuel pump, you should make sure he put something in place to plug the VRO side of the pump, otherwise you may suck air through that side.

If he didn't you can use a small piece of fuel hose, two SS clamps, and a long bolt that fits the fuel hose tightly. Put a clamp on the VRO inlet, and one around the bolt at the other end.

Re: Fuel pump??

No problem, that doesn't sound right though. Just to be clear, is one of the ends of the oil hose still on the VRO inlet on the fuel/VRO pump? If not, you may want to attach it. The point of all this being to keep air from being sucked into the fuel system through the VRO inlet on the fuel pump.

If you are not having fuel starvation problems then it's probably not sucking air, but it's better to keep that inlet blocked off.

Re: Fuel pump??

Yeah he just cut the hose right at the motor and plugged both ends..Basically with the cowling still on and attached, looking at the port side of the motor where all the hoses go in, you can see both ends of vro hose sticking out..Does that make sense? I apologize..I am not too good at explaining myself sometimes..I would take a digital cam picture, but the boat is back in storage right now..

We took it out yesterday for a day of fishing and tubing with a bunch of family and friends and it performed flawlessly!! I love my Whaler!!!

Re: Fuel pump??

If you want to know where the standard fuel pump goes look for two unused threaded holes on the crankcase with a plug in a hole between them (bolt with gasket similar to the oil pan drain plug on a car). when you install the standard fuel pump you remove the plug and it becomes the vacuum sorce to run the pump. then you have to plug the pulse limiter which runs the vro even with the oil side disabled.

Re: Fuel pump??

Sounds good to me. The important thing is it's working well now.
